Trump's economic adviser: 'We're taking a look' at whether Google searches should be regulated

Source: The Washington Post

By Isaac Stanley-Becker and
Brian Fung
August 28 at 9:52 AM

The Trump administration is “taking a look” at whether Google searches should be regulated by the government, said Larry Kudlow, President Trump’s economic adviser, outside the White House Tuesday.

The announcement puts the search giant squarely in the White House’s crosshairs amid wider allegations against the tech industry that it systematically discriminates against conservatives on social media and other platforms.

Kudlow’s remark to reporters came hours after Trump fired off a series of predawn tweets complaining about Google search results for “Trump News.”

In a pair of tweets posted before 6 a.m., the president said the results included only “the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media.”

They are rw Russian Repugs and don't care about America or it's constitution. They are all oligarchs all the time and fuck the rest. Roberts is the only repug currently on the court who occasionally shows an oz. of concern about the constitution or our nation's ideals and those times are rare. We certainly can't count on him to uphold the rule of law over the reign of drumpf and putin.

All of the justices are thinking about their place in history, and First Amendment jurisprudence is too well developed to be meddled with. There is little chance any justice or judge would allow the Government an opportunity to dictate that some speech is more important than other speech, and the Court is most unlikely to impose such edicts on a private, albeit publicly traded, corporation.

48. Programmatically, actually you probably could come up with a decent estimate on 890M records in 5m
Tue Aug 28, 2018, 01:51 PM
Aug 2018

But you'd probably need a Google-Grade server with like 256GB ram, an array of RAID'd SSD's, and 64 threads worth of fast processor power to pull it off ... A higher-end 'home PC' could probably do the query in about 2-12 hours depending largely on RAM capacity and disk IO rate.

BUT ... that's assuming the data is already written to a database and wouldn't include slurping the 890M records over the internet and writing it to the DB, as that part would take DAYS, the number of which would depend on a variety of factors.

Thus it's actually not inconceivable that such a test was in fact done ... I just rather doubt it. Probably more like someone looked at the first 100 result one time, and counted with their finger on the screen ... even then I seriously doubt there'd only be 3 links that weren't pointed at CNN/NBC/CBS/WP/NYT, etc.

65. Protestors Are Gaming Google Images So When You Search 'Idiot,' President Trump Appears
Wed Aug 29, 2018, 04:58 PM
Aug 2018
First President Trump topped protests across London as a giant baby blimp. Now, he’s topping Google Images.

Protestors, activists and Internet users are seeking to influence Google’s algorithm so that when the term “idiot” is searched for, images of Trump pop up on Google. According to the Guardian, this began when British protestors used the Green Day hit “American Idiot” as the anthem for their demonstrations during Trump’s recent visit to the U.K. But now more users are taking advantage of that online association by up-voting a picture of Trump and the word “idiot” on Reddit.

As of Wednesday night, nine of the first ten results on Google Images searches for “idiot” were of or related to President Trump.

This is not the first time Google algorithms have been manipulated. In 2004, searching “Jew” returned a hook-nosed caricature. In 2009, searching “Michelle Obama” returned users a photo of the first lady retouched with ape-like traits. And before the last U.S. election, googling “rapist” would likely return at least five images of Bill Clinton in the top 10, the Guardian reports.
