Mizzou 'reply-all' email snafu follows Missouri Democrats' recruitment attempt

An email from a Democratic staffer was sent to MU personnel Monday morning, according to a copy of the email obtained by the News-Leader. The original message was meant to be sent to Mizzou students in hopes of attracting young people to work to re-elect Sen. Claire McCaskill and other Missouri Democrats this fall.
"Missouri has some of the most competitive and nationally-watched races of the cycle this fall, which presents a great opportunity for you to become civically engaged, make a real difference in a state that matters, and gain solid professional experience which applies to range of future potential careers," the recruitment email says.
But the email didn't just go to all Mizzou students it activated to a much wider email list that reached across the campus, according to Mizzou spokesman Christian Basi, who said university did not give the list to the Missouri Democratic Party.
On Tuesday, Basi said, a single student's email was compromised by a phishing attempt. That student's email account was used to manipulate the Democrats' email into another phishing attempt, Basi said.
