DNC rips reported crackdown on passports: 'This is a disgrace to our democracy'

Source: The Hill

BY BRETT SAMUELS - 08/30/18 08:17 AM EDT

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez hit back late Wednesday against reports that the Trump administration has denied or revoked passports from individuals who were born in the U.S. near the southern border.

“Americans are being targeted, detained, and denied their rights because of the color of their skin. This is a disgrace to our democracy and a vicious assault on our community," Perez said in a statement.

“From the beginning of his campaign and throughout his presidency, Donald Trump has stoked the flames of fear, racism, and xenophobia," he continued. "Democrats know that America is better than this.

"We know that diversity is our nation’s greatest strength," Perez said. "And we will continue to fight this administration’s attacks on Hispanic communities, immigrant families, and all Americans seeking opportunity.”

3. I heard big changes are coming next year

As to exactly what the big changes are, I do not know.

All I do know is that I renewed my passport earlier this year. It was fortunately uneventful but ...

Who knows what the future may hold.

& recommend that if you have a passport needing to be renewed soon or expired, do it soon!

Expired 17 years ago, and didn't get it renewed until about 3 months ago.
Without incident.

Taking a cruise, so I needed the passport.

Glad to know you got yours renewed easily too! Enjoy your vacation!!

BTW (for all reading this): The U.S. passport is the BEST form of ID one can have. So, I'd recommend getting one *just in case*.

Last week, my wife and I traveled to Colombia to visit my elderly mother-in-law. On the flight back to the U.S., my wife (who kept her Latinx surname) was singled out and taken away for “extra screening.” I wasn’t allowed to accompany her and didn’t know until I boarded the plane whether she had been allowed to get on or not. I’m glad I hadn’t read this news first...

Fear will keep people from even trying to register.

even by shutting the government down. He can get away with crap like this because we are a fascist country, not a democracy.

10. People with foreign-sounding names should consider changing their names legally

... and I'm cringing at myself for saying this. This is not our parents' good old USA any more, this is the new reality.

My family ancestors emigrated from Germany (a few from Ireland) over 150 years ago. We're all born here going back 5 generations and none of my family has ever had their citizenship questioned or challenged. But we're white and our name sounds German. If we were brown and had a Spanish-sounding last name I'd be dead certain about going to court and changing it to something less Latino. It's got to be a group decision though, and I doubt that any family would have total agreement about something so personal.

Just to put it in perspective: Germans and Eastern Europeans who emigrated to the US 100 years ago were quite ready to have their names anglicized because they faced discrimination if they didn't. I suspect that many Asian immigrants have been doing the same for a long time.

I know you guys are all going to jump on me for this, but I'm saying it's something to consider.

go after the government for doing so (taking their rights away unilaterally, w/o representation). I suspect that there will be repercussions soon, and should be. Disgusting.
