De Blasio knocks Cuomo debate performance: 'A little desperate'
Source: The Hill
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Thursday knocked Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomos debate performance Wednesday night against his primary opponent, actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.
I found some of the governors counterpoints a little desperate, honestly, de Blasio said of Cuomo's debate responses while appearing on MSNBCs Morning Joe.
De Blasio, who is known to have a strained relationship with the governor, has so far not publicly endorsed either candidate. He did, however, take the opportunity on Thursday to praise Nixon.
Theres no question in my mind Cynthia Nixon is an extraordinary human being, activist, whos made a huge impact, particularly in terms of education and fairness for our children. I thought she more than held her own last night in the debate, I thought she got a lot of a lot of very powerful ideas out and a lot of very powerful critiques out, he said.

This is why I don't play in NYS politics; it's always ugly.

(67,782 posts)....he certainly isn't his father, but between the two I'd vote for Cuomo in a heartbeat. New York could do better, but of all the candidates out there this year he's the best.
Nixon appears to be way over her head and seems to have little knowledge of what it takes to be Governor of New York State. I found her constant interruptions and false claims of Cuomo's "corruption" to be annoying and way off base.
Indicative of her unpreparedness (except for her personal attacks), was this - when asked what makes her qualified to be Governor of a state of 20+ million people, she responded "I'm an activist, I organized school rallies...." That's when she lost me. I don't live in NY so can't vote, but lived there for more than 40 years and most of my family is still there.

(23,420 posts)He seemed good at trying to pass the buck, pointing to the federal government, the Republican-led New York senate, or fiscal constraints.
At the same time, she struck me as an activist and not in the frame of mind of actually governing. I don't think she made a compelling case that she is positioned to accomplish her platform.

(21,794 posts). . .a debate for NYC Mayor or a debate for NYC Governor.
She's gonna get thoroughly creamed in upstate and western NY.
Sorry, but Cynthia Nixon is no Andrew Gillum. She's a novice who has no business trying to become an executive of a very large state on her first go-round in politics. A governorship is not an entry-level job.

(39,374 posts)She'll do great upstate because there are fewer Democrats there (this is a closed primary) and her voters will be the ones more likely to show up.
Cuomo will clean up in cities and suburbs. Nixon should at least be able to match Zephyr Teachout's 2014 popular vote numbers. She lost 60-33 (Nixon's polling around 34 percent) and won as many counties as Cuomo (31). I don't know if Nixon will win that many counties but she'll run stronger in NYC and might beat those PV numbers.

She barely shows up out there (and I don't mean Ithaca or New Paltz, either) and she cannot and does not relate to everyday people's concerns out there.
If she gets over 35% of the vote, it will be a miracle.

(39,374 posts)The weed vote alone will help her carry a number of counties.

(21,794 posts)I doubt it, since most of western and upstate NY is still Republican.

(39,374 posts)Fortunately, well never know how bad. But she is a pretty strong protest candidate for the primary stage. Hopefully some progressive Democrats with more extensive resumes are taking notes.

(21,794 posts)There is much more at stake at the NY state senate level.
That means primarying out the fake Democrats of the so-called Independent Democratic Caucus and replacing them with real, progressive Democrats that will turn the nominal majority they have in the state senate (by 1, I believe) into a real majority that can finally get bills passed that have languished in their chambers for way too long.

And, if necessary, we/they will frog-march Cuomo to the desk to sign these bills into law.

(21,794 posts)After November this year (G*d willing), there will be a real majority of real Democrats in the state senate, and Cuomo will have no further excuses.
