Update: Tropical Storm Florence could form soon in east Atlantic
Source: AL.com
The National Hurricane Center on Thursday said there is a high chance a tropical depression or storm will form in the Atlantic soon and designated it Potential Tropical Cyclone Six.
And tropical storm warnings have been issued for the Cabo Verde Islands.
The system, which is in the far eastern Atlantic just off the west coast of Africa, is expected to intensify and could become Tropical Storm Florence over the next day -- and a hurricane as soon as Sunday.
As of Thursday morning Potential Tropical Cyclone Six had a well defined area of low pressure and is in a good area to intensify.

(129,096 posts)Not necessarily. Last year, Irma, which was "born" today a year ago, ended up becoming a Category 5 on its way over to tear up Florida -
It depends on the steering winds and whether anything shears it apart or alters its course so it recurves around the Bermuda high.
I am concerned that because the Caribbean & GOM have been fairly quiet, the water hasn't been churned up much and is literally like the bathwater that we saw last year that allowed several powerful hurricanes to literally blowup into monsters. At one point, there were 3 of them out there at once -
And not long after, Lee began to form (and eventually became a Hurricane, was left for dead, and regenerated itself later) -
(this was all before Maria tore up Puerto Rico- and yes I tracked all of these last summer...yikes )

(26,295 posts)That's why in the message body I went on to say "Mind you it's not impossible for it to hit............" as I am aware of the fact that anything can happen with hurricanes but statistically speaking most that form out that far do not end up amounting for much.
