I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS! Trump confirms that he insulted Canada in furious rant against media

President Donald Trump on Friday attacked Bloomberg News reporters for allegedly leaking out his comments that blatantly insulted the Canadian government.

Earlier on Friday, the Toronto Star reported that Trump boasted to reporters that he was getting the best of the Canadian government in his negotiations with them. Among other things, the president said he was scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs, while at the same time warning that leaking his insults of Canadians would cause the deal to fall apart because its going to be so insulting theyre not going to be able to make a deal.
Despite the presidents assertions, however, it is still possible that the leaks of his remarks came from another official within the Trump White House and not from the Bloomberg reporters themselves.
The Trump White House on Friday refused to confirm or deny the authenticity of the presidents remarks although it seems the president himself has since confirmed them.

(4,341 posts)Anything any president says, unless he says it in the bathroom, is "on the record"...
I guess someone from the WH scolded him and he had to come up with the usual, blaming someone else for his stupidity.

(25,889 posts)This just shows you have nothing more inside you than lies and do not want a treaty at all, just want to hurt Canada - hmm, because your daddy PUtin asked you to? Trudeau knows you are an idiotic ignorant & ineffective bully, who is nothing more than a total failure at all parts of life.

jayschool2013
(2,606 posts)then journalists don't necessarily have to hold to that obligation. Besides, the story held out the very real possibility that the confidence was broken by someone in the administration who had also been privy to the conversations.

I have never understood the practice of making 'off the record' comments. These politicians work for the American people. ANY THING THEY SAY TO REPORTERS SHOULD BE PUBLIC RECORD PERIOD. This is not a gossip session. Why do "on background" that can't be attributed to people.

(4,033 posts)Note this from the Toronto Star:
Trump made the remarks in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg. He deemed them off the record, and Bloomberg accepted his request not to reveal them.
But the Star is not bound by any promises Bloomberg made to Trump. And the remarks immediately became a factor in the negotiations: Trudeaus officials, who saw them as evidence for their previous suspicions that Trumps team had not been bargaining in good faith, raised them at the beginning of a meeting with their U.S. counterparts on Friday morning, a U.S. source confirmed.
As an earlier commenter said, the leak quite possibly came from inside the White House.
And more interesting, why did Trump tell a roomful of journalists about his intention to screw Canada?

(43,336 posts)Because he wants credit for candor, credit for being a great negotiator, credit for being slick...instead, he looks like a fool (but only because he is one).
If you want to keep a secret, keep it to yourself. What is know to several is known to all.

(12,470 posts)To be off the record, you have to announce that this is off the record Before you make the statement. You can't let something slip then announce it'll piss off people therefore it shouldn't be reported. That's not off the record, that's merely a self indulgent, lack of self control, stream of conscience mistake.
Traitor Trump can't control his anus mouth.

We, the people, will lose, but Trump merely needs to cloak himself in the cloth of a victim, and his fellow "victims" will stand by him, regardless.
