Papadopoulos Suggests British Conspiracy Targeted Trump Campaign

Source: The Daily Beast

George Papadopoulos embarked on a bizarre Twitter tirade late Monday in which he called for an investigation into Australia’s former foreign minister over a supposed British conspiracy against him. Papadopoulos, the first former Trump campaign adviser to be charged in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, questioned the “incredibly suspicious circumstances” in which he met with Alexander Downer, Australia’s ambassador to the U.K. at the time, in a London bar in May 2016.

It was during that encounter that Papadopoulos reportedly boasted of Russia having “political dirt” on Hillary Clinton, a claim Downer reported back to U.S. authorities. While disputing that he ever made such a statement to Downer, Papadopoulos questioned whether the meeting was proof that “British intelligence” had been “weaponized against an American citizen.” “The notion that Downer randomly reached out to me just to have a gin and tonic is laughable. For the sake of our republic and the integrity of this investigation, I think it’s time Downer is as exposed as Christoper Steele,” Papadopoulos wrote.

Papadopoulos, who was sentenced to 14 days in jail last week for lying to the FBI, also mocked Downer for “wearing women’s fish nets.” Australia is part of the Five Eyes national-security information-sharing agreement along with the U.S., Britain, Canada, and New Zealand.

Someone check Papadopoulos' bank account for a recent sizable deposit. Doesn't it seem peculiar that George's story dovetails so nicely into Donnie Two Scoops' paranoid fantasy that everyone in the world was out to get him during the 2016 campaign, despite Putin's admitting wanting Trump to win while standing next to the Orange One in Helsinki?

This is part and parcel of the Repugs latest efforts to cut the Mueller investigation off at its knees. For more than a year they attacked the validity of the FISA warrant, arguing that it should be thrown our because it was solely based on Christopher Steele's dossiers. After IQ45 took the unprecedented action of declassifying a FISA warrant--especially during an active investigation--they were left with egg on their face because the voluminous documents showed that the primary reason for beginning the Russia investigation was Papadopoulos' drunken bragging to an Australian diplomat about the Russians having illegally obtained Hillary's emails, and how they were going to use them to help Trump and hurt Hillary.

Watch all the talking heads begin parroting the story line that Mueller's investigation should be shut down because its genesis was caused by an planned attack on the Trump campaign by a foreign power--Australia.

strange. The "five eyes" are 5 very close allies that have formed a special group to share intelligence that they do not share with the rest of the world. This is identical to Trump's claims that US intelligence was against him.

Not to mention, it does not change that Papadopoulos bragged to the ambassador that Russia illegally obtained Hillary Clinton's emails. The point is that HE believed that Russia was interfering in our election -- and bragged about it obviously considering it a good thing. The fact is the correct reaction even if they were unsure of the accuracy of that claim - which they totally believed - would have been to go to the FBI and inform them of these troubling contacts. (Remember when Gore (as a dirty trick by the Bush team) was sent a copy of Bush's debate book, his staff immediately informed authorities and the Bush campaign. Note that did not even involve a hostile nation!

Strange that Republicans - after being told Canada was bad are not being told that Austraila is evil. But Putin is good and he has a good relationship with Kim yung Un! What a strange world view is needed to believe this.

Or is he just scott free without further supervision? I'm not familiar with how that works with Federal convicted felons. I guess he's still hoping for that plum West Wing job. Well, I guess if the expected purge of "senior WH officials" takes place as expected, he's probably got a pretty good shot at something, amiright? And at the rate this is going, there won't be a single rethuglican left anywhere in the realm of politics or big business who doesn't have an asterisk after their name indicating they've been indicted and convicted of something, from child molestation, spousal abuse, fraud, money laundering, racketeering, blackmail, extortion or lying before Congress, the FBI, the entire alphabet soup and the synod, diocese or local rabbi.

I thought that felons who've finished their terms had some sort of supervision following their prison exit, but I guess that's only for those probationers who've been granted early release for good behavior but require supervision until their term is finished.

WASHINGTON — The man whose boozy conversation with a diplomat may have launched the federal government's investigation into Russian election interference was sentenced Friday to 14 days in jail and one year of supervised release for lying to the FBI.

which means -

Supervised Release Law and Legal Definition

Supervised release is a sentencing option adopted in addition to the sentence of imprisonment given by the state, provincial or federal court to the guilty. This was created by the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 as an alternative to parole and probation for federal offenders. The supervised release starts after a person is released from prison. Following his or her release, an offender is sentenced to a period of supervision in the community. The offender is put under direct supervision, and monitoring regarding his/her prohibited and mandated behaviors. Supervised release does not replace a portion of the sentence of imprisonment, like parole. A supervised release is given in addition to the time spent in prison.

The offender released on supervised release is supervised by the U.S. probation officers. The offender must report regularly to his or her assigned probation officer. Sometimes the offender is submitted to random drug testing and sometimes he/she will require a permission to leave certain area or geographic region.
