'I was angry and I sent it': Fourth Kavanaugh accuser referred to FBI after recanting
Source: USA Today
WASHINGTON - Just days before the midterm elections, Sen. Chuck Grassley asked the federal authorities on Friday to investigate another person he says made false claims against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Grassley, in a letter to the Justice Department and FBI, said a woman by the name of Judy Munro-Leighton took responsibility for authoring an anonymous letter that made allegations that Kavanaugh and a friend raped her. After she was tracked down and interviewed by Senate investigators, the woman recanted and said she was not the author and had never met Kavanaugh.
Grassley claims the woman is a left-wing activist and told investigators it was "just a ploy," he wrote in the letter. Her full comments to investigators were not made available and efforts by USA TODAY to reach Munro-Leighton were unsuccessful.
The letter marks the fourth request Grassley has made of federal authorities to investigate those involved in the controversial Kavanaugh proceedings, which were extended due to a series of sexual assault allegations surfacing when Kavanaugh was in high school and college.

(988 posts)This seems more like a GOP move to make Kavanaugh seem more appealing.
Did any of you every hear of a 4th accuser during the heat of the moment?

(26,731 posts)In fact... Kavanaugh was questioned on it during the hearing.
A number of posters warned that she seemed less
credible than other accusers (not the least because it was an anonymous letter)

(15,682 posts)Someone authored an anonymous letter that made allegations about Kavanaugh (and a second person) raping her. So Senate investigators tracked down a woman whom they believed was the author of the anonymous letter. She told them she was not the author of the anonymous letter and that she had never met Kavanaugh.
So a woman who didn't write an anonymous letter admitted she didn't write the letter and didn't know Kavanaugh.
What's her crime? This is too confusing for me.

(26,731 posts)Someone wrote an anonymous letter... and then a second woman wrote an email claiming to be the author of the first letter and repeating the allegations... but gave her name. Then they tracked the second woman down and she admits she was lying.

(15,682 posts)People taking credit for anonymous accusation letters. Then confessing their innocence. Sounds like a case for the FBI.

(26,731 posts)Its still a false accusation of rape (a crime in itself but also damaging to actual victims). That would be a job for the police except that it was made to Congress. So its the FBIs bailiwick.
My guess would be that shes more than a little nutty and nothing will come of it.

(7,596 posts)The claims of this woman were never taken seriously by the media as she never received any coverage. Grasshole is just trying to discredit the other accusers.

(22,569 posts)have the ability to lie and commit crimes. Common sense should tell us that even a small percentage of sexual assault or harassment accusations will be false. Now this would seem insignificant unless you are the man being accused.
In the same vein, we on the Left tend to easily believe that a Republican accused of sexual assault or of being a pedophile is obviously guilty but then make excuses for when it is a Democrat. But we are imperfect people as well with feet of clay and terrible crimes are committed by people and not just members of the opposing party.
I once had a coworker who jokingly said about the death penalty, "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" and I hope we haven't reached the point where an accusation automatically makes the man guilty. All sexual assault and harassment claims need to be taken seriously and investigated seriously, but a bell that is struck cannot be unrung.
Let the flailing commence.

Unless you're mentally ill, falsely accusing a man of sexually assaulting you makes zero sense. You have nothing really to gain and plenty to lose for doing that.

(22,569 posts)of sexually assaulting or harassing her, how do you think you would fare? No, you won't get lynched anymore but on the accusation of a white woman is likely all it would take to send you to prison. If we're honest we know it happens.
In a nation of over 300 million people is it possible that there might be a few innocent men languishing in prison because they were falsely accused of sexual misconduct?
As Willliam Blackstone said, that under the law it's better to let 10 guilty persons go free than to convict an innocent one.
Now every man who has committed sexual assault or other sexual misconduct should be convicted or suffer the consequences, but it seems that with every other crime we somehow manage to presume one is innocent until proven guilty and not simply guilty from having been accused because proven or admitted false accusations will take a toll on the MeToo movement, especially if they are high profile.
