Harris County jury returns verdict for husband of fired deputy in diner choking case

Source: Houston Chronicle

A Harris County jury Monday convicted the husband of a former county deputy of murder in the high-profile death of a young Houston father who was fatally choked at a Crosby-area Denny’s.

Terry Thompson, 42, who faces up to life in prison, was convicted of murdering 24-year-old John Hernandez last year after placing him a chokehold that left him brain dead.

Jurors spent 12 hours deliberating Thompson's guilt, and rejected his defense team's contention he was acting in self-defense. They deliberated seven hours Friday and returned Monday morning to continue.

It is the second time the notorious case has gone to trial. In June, the first trial ended in a mistrial after a hung jury was unable to reach a verdict

Finally, this case begged for justice. The victim was 5'7" and weighed 127 pounds. The murderer was a bodybuilder and weighed at least 250 lbs.

being smaller does not always mean being weak nor harmless.
That aside the verdict was the right one given that the article mentions that there is video which shows Hernandez signaling he gave up yet Thompson did not let up and it lead to Hernandez
dying.

brother gave me a black eye when I was 9. You think I should have tackled him to the ground and put him in a choke-hold? I think this guys justification was that when he confronted Hernandez, Hernandez hit him, perhaps that's when he got the black eye. A little guy can throw the first punch but that doesn't mean he was any match for Mr. Thompson.

out the fallacy of assuming someone being smaller means that they cannot hurt someone and as I said the verdict given the evidence appears to be the right one in this case.

I don't know the details but it could have happened in his final struggle for his life for all I know. What did happen?

"Thompson was hit in the face by Hernandez and received a black eye. He was able to quickly get on top of Hernandez and put him in a chokehold." which tends to imply that the hit to the eye took place before Thompson penned Hernandez.
That aside Thompson is still guilty for causing Hernandez to die regardless.

For peeing outside the bar. He verbally attacked and threatened him, then shoved him, and his wife was also in on it -- she is up on murder charges also. Then, the victim socked the dude.

Your posts are classic victim blaming -- stop it.

I remember when this happened, and have seen the video -- it is murder. After the victim tapped out and went limp, the murderer held him in the chokehold for over 3.5 minutes. His wife is also up on murder charges, and she also will be convicted.
