Judge blocks Keystone XL pipeline

A federal judge blocked the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline Thursday, saying the Trump administration’s justification for approving it last year was incomplete.

In a major victory for environmentalists and indigenous rights groups, Judge Brian Morris of the District Court for the District of Montana overturned President Trump’s permit for the Canada-to-Texas pipeline, which the president signed shortly after taking office last year.

The decision once again throws into doubt the future of the 1,179-mile Keystone XL, which for much of the decade since its proposal by TransCanada Corp. has been a lightning rod in national energy policy.

The Trump administration had tried to argue that federal courts didn’t even have the right to review Trump’s approval, saying that it extended from his constitutional authority over border crossings. The court rejected that argument.

Like many of you, I drive to work each day, and have an American-sized carbon footprint. I cannot afford expensive environmental upgrades, so I have good tires, a well-tuned car and drive less. When I can, for instance, I insist on using Go To Meeting technology so I don't have to drive somewhere to attend a meeting, and I telecommute two days out of the week.

The thing that lost me on the Keystone pipeline is the testimony of the oil executives before Congress. Remember? When one of the Senators asked the executives if they would sell this oil in America so we'd be less dependent on oil from the Mid-East and other places, the executives all answered, "No, we won't do that. We will sell this oil on the open market so our shareholders can have the highest possible earnings.

That, and the massive Native American protests around the pipeline convinced me that we need to be putting more resources into renewables.

General Motors is expected to introduce a number of new electric car models through 2023, and there is much opportunity in creating infrastructure to accommodate these new cars. Plug ins, better battery technology, environmentally friendly battery disposal and so on. Not to mention solar and wind power. Did you know that Kaiser Permanente has solar panels creating a 'roof' over some of its parking spots in my state? All we need is plug ins powered by those solar panels and we're in business.
