Pelosi: Gun control 'will be a priority' in next House

Source: The Hill

BY TAL AXELROD - 11/08/18 10:38 PM EST

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who plans to return as Speaker in the next Congress, declared Thursday that gun control will be a priority under the newly elected Democratic majority.

“I do believe, because in this Congress…there is bipartisan legislation to have common sense background checks to prevent guns going into the wrong hands. It doesn’t cover everything, but it will save many lives,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time" as the nation grapples with its latest mass shooting.

“This will be a priority for us going into the next Congress,” she added.

Pelosi noted that Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) refused to bring such legislation to the floor under his speakership, saying he did so because he knew it would actually pass.

Mother of Thousand Oaks shooting victim she says survived Las Vegas massacre: 'I want gun control'

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 11/08/18 10:58 PM EST

A mother of one of the 12 people killed in a mass shooting at a popular bar in a Los Angeles suburb on Wednesday night is demanding more gun control after his death.

"I have two words: gun control," Susan Orfanos, the mother of shooting victim Telemachus Orfanos, told BuzzFeed News on Thursday. "Now, now, now, now. No more NRA. No more money. Gun control now."

Orfanos said her son also attended the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas last year, surviving what has been declared the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. But Orfanos said her son never returned from the popular Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Wednesday night after a gunman opened fire inside the bar and killed 12 people.

"I don't want prayers. I don't want thoughts,” Orfanos said in an interview with a local ABC station shortly after the death of her son. “I want gun control.”

1. Gun control is going to be a thorn though because we do not have a majority in the Senate

plus the 2nd amendment greatly limits what Congress can do to legislate it.

No it doesn't. The whole first part starts with - "A well regulated militia....".

What needs to happen is the update and re-authorization of the assault weapons ban that sunsetted in 2004 (it had a provision requiring it be renewed every 10 years after it became law in 1994).

in the end decide if a law is or is not Constitutional.
To be honest what we need to really do is amend the 2nd amendment of the Constitution to directly address the issue but I doubt that will happen.

6. But keep in mind

that there is something out there that we have "seen" in play that has acted as a check against the current administrtion, but in many cases, something that DU isn't even aware of or appreciates, and that is the fact that Obama was able to appoint 329 judges and flip the 9 of the 13 Circuit courts so they have Democratic justices.

This means that cases that might have rolled through easily like the Heller case (gun control in D.C. thwarted) a decade ago, may get another look with a different makeup of the circuit courts. And because the SCOTUS obviously can't hear thousands and thousands of cases each term, most cases "end" at the Circuit Courts.

I realize this only covers issues "after" they unfold, but it seems that if one is sane enough to buy a gun, that person is sane enough to stand trial for the crimes committed with guns. No more "reason of insanity" crap for these folks.

Ultimately, they should not be buying a weapon ANYWHERE if they are mentally ill. If someone is found to have a weapon they are not supposed to have, they are in deep trouble. The same things that warrant searches, mandatory sentencing, etc for drugs can be used for guns.

I would think the police would like to see an end to this madness too.

7. The issue of "by reason of insanity" is that

it seems to almost always apply to white criminals, yet black criminals are rarely considered "insane" and many of them really are.

The related issue would be those who have had past problems with domestic abuse and those are folks who also don't need any "legal" gun. The fact that they abuse a spouse means that they have a tendency to act out their anger through violence and a gun makes it easier.

The "insanity" plea I think gets used way too much and would agree that it is white people who get it, not POC.

You won't even get all the Dems to support it much less the Repukes.

15. It took James Brady 13 years after he and Raygun were shot

to get his famous "Brady Bill" enacted.

You just have to keep at it. And remember, the Democrats will need to answer to their constituents too.

If anything, by now controlling one chamber (the House), after 8 years of being out of power, REAL hearings can be held in order to get the latest info and assessments on the types of "modifications' that are available out there, get groups that track the statistics in to testify, look at the public health and law enforcement perspectives, and then start writing/marking up legislation.

Whatever thoughtful process occurs in the House NOW can be instructive for the Senate in the future, should we be successful in taking that back in 2020 (the GOP will have a large number of seats to defend).

My God...this is why I think baby boomer Nancy Pelosi needs to be taken out of a leadership position.

First, stop saying gun control...say gun accountability measures, or gun safety measures...in politics, words matter...

Second, after taking the House, but not the Senate...this should not be the first issue out of the door...

80% of the country supports action on this issue, including me. The Dems have to sell it.

The strategy has to be carefully worked out, and the words "gun control" cannot be used. We're way past the time to tackle this issue but the RWNJs have gone insane over it. Pavlov's dog is already salivating.
