Stan Lee Dead at 95
Source: TMZ
Stan Lee, the man who co-created Marvel Comics, has died ... TMZ has learned.
We're told an ambulance rushed to Lee's Hollywood Hills home early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told that's where he died.
Lee had suffered several illnesses over the last year or so -- he had a bout of pneumonia and vision issues.
Stan started Marvel with Jack Kirby in 1961 with The Fantastic Four. He went on to create Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man and The Avengers.
Stan made cameo appearances in all of the Marvel movies.

(17,862 posts)I have always been a Kirby fan, but with the MCU I came to love and appreciate what he did for comics before I became a serious reader. Most of the great Lee runs were over by then, and a pre-teen and teenager really didn't care who the editor was.
Thank you Stan for all the memories, for helping to create some great lasting characters, and for being a great ambassador for comics.
The geeks have taken over Hollywood, and you are big reason for it.

(3,275 posts)I was standing line at comic con and he walked by. He was smiling, waving and giving high fives to people. He seems like he was a nice man. It is sad to see him go.

(17,862 posts)I never was at a comic convention with him.
I did meet Jack Kirby in the mid-1970s when I was all total fan boy for him. It might have been the day (which was towards the end), but he didn't seem to be having a good time signing comics. I have collected very few celebrity signatures, and I wonder if seeing Kirby like that was the reason.

(15,381 posts)There were four photo-ops with him spread out over 2 days. Each one had 4 lines of at least 200 people each. I made sure I was last (you'll see why). They herded us in like cattle, Stan was seated, he'd quickly greet you, photo taker would yell, "Smile," then herd you out. Took 5 to 8 seconds. Stan was as happy in the last photo as he was the first because 1) he loved the fans and 2) because I'm sure after each photo he was thinking, "That's another $XXX! Ka-ching!"
Totally worth it though.

(36,423 posts)Stan Lee was a huge friend of the library
1."When I was a kid, I couldn't afford to buy the books I wanted, but three blocks away there was a public library and man, to me it was a magic place."
2. "There was the book. I walk in, I give them the card, they stamp the card, I take the book home, it's mine for a few days and I can read it."
3. "When you have a library card, it's like having a key to all the information in the world."
4. "When you have a library card, you can read anything about anything, and I found whatever you read it doesn't matter--it increases your fund of knowledge."
5. "So a library card is an 'open sesame' to all the knowledge in the world."

(17,566 posts)I didn't tumble onto Marvel comics until my college days. The glory days of Marvel had just begun to wane. Stan's legend and legacy have been debated pro and cons for decades. But no matter what, he brought the mythology of super heroes to a peak that others are now just catching up with.
Safe travels, sir.

I don't read comics anymore, but he was a legend. RIP.

(18,837 posts)I bought every single title, every week. I was never much of a DC fan at all, except for the occasional book.
Those were the days of 3 network channels on TV, no "cable," no Internet. It was comic books and the very occasional trip to a "record store," about a 45 minute drive from where I lived, unless I went to Zayre, which was closer.
I know that in modern times, Stan's name is plastered across every new "Marvel Universe" movie. When I was a kid, Iron Man wasn't Robert Downey Jr. He was about three years old when I was up to my eyeballs in Marvel Comics.
In short, Stan Lee made being a kid feel like being a kid. He was the source of fun, he was the magician who kept pulling one inconceivable rabbit after another out of his hat.
R.I.P., "Smilin' Stan."
