Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says she has the votes to become the next House speaker

Source: Washington Post

An unbowed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) insisted Thursday that she has the votes to become the chamber’s speaker despite solid opposition from more than a dozen Democrats who want fresh leadership when the party takes control of the chamber next year.

“I have overwhelming support in my caucus to be speaker of the House,” Pelosi told reporters. “I happen to think at this point, I’m the best person for that.”

A vote in the Democratic caucus is scheduled for Nov. 28. The full will House vote Jan. 3 to elect a new speaker.

During her remarks, Pelosi touted the size of the Democratic victory in the midterm election, which she called “almost a tsunami.” With a few races still to be decided, Democrats are poised to pick up close to 40 seats in the chamber.

She called that “the biggest victory for the Democrats since 1974, when the Watergate babies came in.”

The next 2 years are going to be pure hell with trump and the repubs. She will give trump hell. She knows how it works. I can't believe newbies think they would be up to the task.

I've heard several people mention the possibility of Speaker Pelosi stepping aside in a couple of years after grooming someone new for the position.... that wouldn't be a bad option. In any case Pelosi has the knowledge and experience to get things done.

Just the fact that these newbies thought they were going to take over is insane. I saw where the 5 white guys pushing to unseat Nancy have less progressive votes than Nancy. We need to focus on our agenda and sticking it to the repubs.

We would not have the ACA without her. "Obamacare" could easily have been called "Pelosi-care" because SHE made that happen.

Any Dem speaker that the R's are happy about is cause for concern. They are NOT happy about her, and for very good reason.

It's just like the "oh God no" chorus when it's brought up that Clinton might run again ... "oh God no", because she is hated so much. It's like, do you really think that Republicans will do group hugs with anyone the Democrats nominate?

(side note, I really don't think Clinton will run again, she would have been out there campaigning a lot more in the 2018 election if she were. I don't want to derail this into another Clinton hatefest)

The last two years weren't because Nancy let things happen for "it" while the speaker/leader of the opposition. She was NOT the speaker of the house.

The dems were in the minority. How anybody could logically blame what happened on Pelosi is mind boggling.

I'd be open to the idea of somebody better, but I haven't found a source who has actually been able to name somebody who is genuinely better. Failing that, let's get this behind us and get to work.

(Admittedly, Obama and Hillary would have provoked hilarious GOP responses, but at some point we've got to be serious, and that means Speaker Pelosi.)

is the one that wants Pelosi out because she's an effective leader. I seriously doubt many, if any, voters for the rebels voted for them because the candidate said they didn't support Pelosi.

in as Committee Chairs speaks to her commitment to train her replacement...love to see Beto O'Rourke...and to help shift the party a bit to the left. I'd guess AOC stands to reap one of them, maybe this choice?

And as has been pointed out up thread...the Republicans hate her with a white hot hate...maybe even more than HRC. Sweet.
