Kansas governor calls for resignation of county official who made 'master race' comment to black woman

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 11/18/18 08:24 AM EST

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer (R) is calling for the resignation of a white county official who made a comment about being part of the “master race.”

Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp sparked backlash last week after making the comment, directed at a black woman during a public hearing.

“Racial and discriminative language have no place in our society, and most especially when spoken by someone holding a public office,” Colyer said in a statement.

“The inappropriate remarks made by Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp are unacceptable and do not reflect the values of the county which he represents,” the statement read. “As such, I call on him to step down as County Commissioner.”

As I always say, being racist is dumb/racists are dumb.

and sometimes it happens in front of all to see as most racists believe they are not racists but stating beliefs as facts they expect the rest of us to accept

So true. 50+ years they have spent honing their skills on the dog whistle, only to have people like this county commissioner wreck it.

Maybe it started out as a bad taste joke, in his mind. But he added to it, which took it out of the "joke" category and accidentally belied his beliefs. And even if it was a joke, I would not have someone in govt who makes jokes like that. Someone w/o a filter of what is racist and insulting and harmful to others doesn't belong in govt.

The person speaking might be "joking", but there are people who hear it and don't think it's a joke.

A few right-wingers made the spurious argument that when Klemp made the comment, he didn't 'mean' it to be racist. It was, they said, only him noting a common physical feature, a gap between the front teeth, and then saying that it made both of them members of the 'master race.' So, their argument goes, he was accepting her as equal.

But...it WAS racist. The allusion to a 'master race' is in itself racist. And they don't see that. That is what is alarming.
