Maryland College Student Dies Of Virus That Killed 11 Kids In N.J.

Source: CBS News

5 hrs. ago.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A University of Maryland student has died from an adenovirus-related illness. CBS station WJZ-TV reports the student, identified as 18-year-old UMD freshman Olivia Paregol, was in her first semester of college.

The University of Maryland issued a letter acknowledging the death, though never naming anyone officially.

The letter acknowledged in part that on November 19, the university learned that "the testing of one specimen sent to the CDC revealed Adenovirus 7, a strain that may cause more severe illness."

Adenovirus has been in the news in recent weeks after at least 11 children died from the disease at a rehab facility in New Jersey.

Paregol's father spoke to WJZ the same day he had to make funeral arrangements for his daughter. "Just the sweetest girl that you would ever possibly meet," said Ian Paregol, her father.- MORE...

The university said it learned of the student's illness on November 1; there have been reports of 5 additional cases of students with an adenovirus-associated illness since then. Adenoviruses are common causes of colds, but there are strains that can cause more serious illnesses. Paregol's father believes his daughter's Crohn's disease weakened her immune system and was a factor.

Also: "Olivia's father said she had been sick since September with a cough and made frequent stops to the University's Health Center.
It's also where she would get medication for her Crohn's Disease, which her dad says weakened her immune system. Doctors said it would have definitely put her at risk for complications.

"When the virus gets into the lungs it can cause damage to the lungs and often you'll get what's called a superinfection or a bacterial infection on top of it, which can also be very serious," said Dr. Scott Krugman, Vice Chair Pediatrics Sinai Hospital.
> Paregol also said he now wonders if an outbreak of mold on campus back in the fall made things worse. Olivia lived in one of the dorms where students were evacuated so cleaning could be done."

by denying Medicaid expansion and killing ACA. People will not seek treatment. viruses will run unchecked, fascists want a sick society so they can protect capitalism.

managing quite well, both young, in their 20s and 30s. I only knew one person who had this, in the 1980s.

Why these GI diseases are increasing in incidence must relate to toxins in food and the environment and the fact that we have looser regulations in the US than in Europe.

Colon cancer is also rising in younger people. The ACA now recommends the first colonoscopy at age 45.

I've read recent news reports on studies showing some immigrants' gut microbes are altered when they move to the US.

Immigration to the United States can trigger a swift and radical change in the population of bacteria living in the human gut, according to a study of people who moved from Thailand to Minnesota.

this is tragic but UMD has been good about health issues in my experience. They provided free H1N1 vaccines and seasonal flu vaccines to students when I was there.

The new immunosuppressant I’m on isn’t as broad spectrum as some the insurance required me to try first, but even so... I didn’t realize people were weaning off for employment itself; I haven’t been able to decide how much information I should disclose when I start working among other things

I hope she finds peace

and add in student loan debt. Another friend's son went off ADHD meds with the docs permission because of applying for positions.

Makes me livid, matters weren't like this in the past generations. A cruel, selfish environment we have now.

So two young folks reduced meds while job searching- for colitis & ADHD. And both had to resume meds that I know.

Use your judgement about how much health info. to disclose I'd say, and best of luck. Stay well!

the majority if human's immune system originates in the gut. So much as been learned and so much more to be discovered. The Human Microbiome Project is doing amazing work....another legacy of the Obama Presidency.
