Parkland Student Asks Trump To Honor Shooting Victim

Less than a year after 17 people died during a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a student is working to have one of the victims honored by President Donald Trump. Kyle Kashuv, a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, shooting, started a petition for Peter Wang, who was killed, to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wang, a 15-year-old freshman at the school, was a member of the Junior ROTC (JROTC) program and sacrificed his own life to save others.
When the gunfire broke out, Wang was wearing his JROTC shirt and instead of running for his life, he held a door open so other students could escape, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Unfortunately, his decision to save others, something his family said embodied who the 15-year-old was, was his final act of selflessness. Wang was shot and killed.
He is so brave. He is the person who is genuinely kind to everyone. He doesnt care about popularity. He always liked to cheer people up. He is like the big brother everyone wished they had, Lin Chen, Wangs cousin, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
In honor of Wangs heroism, Kashuv called for the country to join together and cross party lines to ask Trump to posthumously award Wang the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The award is the highest civilian award in the United States. -MORE...

Another Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, Cameron Kasky also vocalized his support. For the Presidential Medal of Freedom, theres no better recipient, Kasky told WFOR. Peter lost his life defending others, which is what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to go into the military and that is a young man who deserves this honor.
Peter Wang's dream was to attend the prominent US military academy, West Point. The academy posthumously admitted him in honor of his actions during the Feb. 14 shooting.

(3,469 posts)I don't disagree with him on this. It's more likely to happen because of his wingnut status. Trump listens to his fans.

(2,383 posts)Even some of the other survivors and Mr Guttenberg were disgusted with him. I increasingly got annoyed with him.
He is so far from his peers that its like he experienced a vastly different view of the school shooting.
He reminds me of the lead singer from Eagles of Death Metal.

But, yeah, it wouldn't happen because Trump wants people to forget the slaughter lest public reaction hurt the gun manufacturers. Also, it's probably not feasible for Trump to put himself in the center of the honor given to this young man -- although he would tarnish the honor by saying -- maybe joking -- that if Peter Wang had only been armed . . . .
So, no, there would be no medal awarded -- not even if millions of people across the country wrote to the WH pleading for it. No even if 10s of millions of tweets were sent to Trump pointing out the significance of giving the award to one who died so young and so bravely. (Or, Orrin Hatch could make a public offer to Mr. Wang's family -- fly them to Washington and give them the damned medal Trump gave him. Just sayin'.)
