Hyde-Smith Attended All-White 'Seg Academy' to Avoid Integration
Source: Jackson Free Press
JACKSON, Miss. U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith attended and graduated from a segregation academy that were set up so that white parents could avoid having to send their children to schools with black students, a yearbook reveals.
A group photo in the 1975 edition of The Rebelthe Lawrence County Academy Yearbookillustrates the point. High-school cheerleaders smile at the camera as they lie on the ground in front of their pom-poms, fists supporting their heads. In the center, the mascot, dressed in what appears to be an outfit designed to mimic that of a Confederate general, offers a salute as she holds up a large Confederate flag.
Third from the right on the ground is a sophomore girl with short hair, identified in the caption as Cindy Hyde.
The photo, and the recently appointed Republican senators attendance at one of the many private schools that was set up to bypass integration, adds historic context to comments she made in recent weeks about a public hanging that drew condemnations from across the political spectrum.

(10,437 posts)schooling. Make no mistake about it, we have 30% of the population that are 100% against what america stands for unless it excudes all non-whites. Trump has brought them out of the shadows and we need to send them all back.

(3,166 posts)She was appointed last year and kinda flew under the radar, but now that the spotlight is on her, something new comes out every day. Will it be enough? I doubt it, but she seems cut from the same cloth as Palin, DeVos, Jan Brewer, et al. What is it about these crazy Republican women that voters seem to love in these red states? Come on Mississippi- prove us wrong!

(651 posts)If you look at the history of many of them, they were established right about the same time that the Civil Rights Bill was passed. I know that is true of a few of those schools here in my city.

The terms used back then as noted in the article are exactly the same as the ones used in the current private school movement-- 'vouchers,' 'charters,' then 'Xian.' Just incredible.

She went to Lawrence County Academy in Monticello, Miss., which was a segregation academy set up to circumvent Supreme Court rulings which ordered the desegration of public schools.[7] The school's team nickname was Rebels, the mascot was a confederate general who carried a confederate flag

(10,136 posts)She may or may not have had a choice in where she went to high school. However, every recent interview with her or story about her shows that she's currently a vacuous, clueless, air-headed Trumpista who does not deserve to be elected to the US Senate.

but the fact she wants a front row seat to a lynching as an adult? Yeah......... that makes you racist. this is what we should be talking about

He's Mexican-American and his parents wanted him to get a good education and also didn't want him getting into trouble.
They had attended public schools and wanted their children to be able to attend college. The public schools were not preparing students for college.

(50,557 posts)In 2007, she voted for a resolution that praised a Confederate soldier for his efforts to defend his homeland.
While she was in the MS Senate, she proposed renaming a state highway for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy.
In 2014, she posted a photo of her wearing a Confederate cap and carrying a rifle. The photo was captioned, "Mississippi history at its best!"
In the state senate, she had a 100-percent pro-life rating. She is a lifetime member of the NRA, but Gun Owners of America only gives her a 50-percent approval rating.
She voted for the Trump Tax Cut and supports the Trump Wall.
Her daughter was sent to, and graduated from, a different segregation academy than the one Cindy attended.
During her short term in the Senate, she voted with Trump more than any other Republican senator.
