Republican Hyde-Smith beats Democrat Espy in Mississippi Senate race
Source: NBC News
Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has defeated Democrat Mike Espy in Tuesday night's special Senate election in Mississippi, a contest tainted by race-related controversies, NBC News projects.
With 78% of votes being reported, Hyde-Smith had 55.2%, or 363,567 votes, to 44.8%, or 296,254 votes, for Espy, according to NBC News.
Hyde-Smith, who becomes the first woman elected to Congress from Mississippi, will serve out the remaining two years of former GOP Sen. Thad Cochran's term, whom she was appointed to replace earlier this year after he resigned.
With her win, Republicans will start the new Congress in January with a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

That said, given this is MS it will be hardpressed to get a Dems win here.

(178 posts)I say this as a 52 yo white male from Alabama. I know that most white southerners are sh*ts, but it's overwhelming at the numbers.
I know that not all white folk are racists in MS----just most.
Mostly, I'm disheartened. It won't stop me from voting for equality and a better, democratic, society. But I think, "What sort of world do these beings want?" Me, what do I want? I don't have children so the point is moot. I'm going to glide my way to my grave. Do they really think their spawn is going to win? Do they think their progeny will come out on top? Do they really not understand how to cooperate and get along?
I can look at Hyde-Smith and confidently say, "Yes, you won this contest; But you are not a winner." There is no way Hyde-Smith's pedigree will compete on a world scale. Her best bet was to "cooperate with" rather than to "compete with".
The problem with Republicans is that they think they are special. They want to be recognized as special people. They don't realize that they are just like everyone else. Humanity's strength is in its ability to cooperate.
I'm hoping there is more of us then there are of them else we fall victim to the tragedy of the commons. If all you have to live for is you, you are most wretched of human beings.

Those racist comments seem to have worked well for this woman, the white folks ate it up and are reassured that racism still reigns supreme.

(16,844 posts)Mississippi is about 60-65% Republican, so there were at least some of them who voted for Espy. I knew she would win, but I voted just to show that we arent all assholes down here. Liberals or Progressives arent as rare down here as it appears. Voter apathy is the root of a lot of our problems. Id like to see how well Democrats do with cannabis legalization on the ballot.

Corporate-Funded Outside Groups Spend Big on Hyde-Smith After Public Hanging Comment
Mississippi Sen. Hyde-Smith has benefited from $3.7 million in outside spending since her racist remark was made public.

(snips)
Leading the pack are two GOP committees, the National Republican Senate Committee, a party group that has spent $1.8 million to aid Hyde-Smith since Nov. 13, and the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC that has spent $1.2 million. Other groups such as the pro-Trump America First Action ($271,000), the Mississippi Victory Fund ($174,000), and the National Rifle Association ($82,000) have also supported Hyde-Smith over the last two weeks.
--------
Liberal groups are being outspent three-to-one by those boosting Hyde-Smith. Espy has gotten help from Senate Majority PAC, which has spent $874,000 on independent expenditures since Hyde-Smiths hanging comment. Only one other group, the Progressive Turnout Project, has spent more than $100,000 to benefit Espy since then.
The National Republican Senate Committees counterpart on the left, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, hasnt reported any spending on the race, despite having spent millions to oppose Republican Senate candidates in other states. The Democratic National Committee has donated roughly $327,000 since June to the Mississippi Democratic Party, which is investing in get-out-the-vote efforts but hasnt made any independent expenditures. The state GOP has spent a modest $11,000 on outside advertising backing Hyde-Smith since the Nov. 7 general election.
This is not democracy. Reading that list of wealthy individuals and corporations is sickening. IMO, no voter should have any advantage over any other voter because of their wealth. This is the evil side of capitalism.
Considering racism, voter disenfranchisement, and Hyde-Smith's lying robo calls on top of all that spending, it's probably a miracle Mr. Espy did as well as he did!

(10,123 posts)I can't blame it all on lying, gerrymandering, Citizen's United, voter suppression, etc
I'm sure some or all of those factors were present.
It is the degree of racism that is hurtful or makes my head spin.
We have laws against discrimination but it is ok if our leaders are racist .... that just won't compute in my head. She should not have been allowed to run (please pass on the lectures for freedoms).
As a young man, I naively thought MLK and the Civil Rights of 1964 had us on our way to putting this behind us. 54 years later and an outcome like this ... it is disheartening ... yet I cannot imagine how black people must feel but the wondering is haunting. The shame of this result takes my breath away.
I cannot accept this result with "oh well ..."
We still have a lot of work to do.
