Democrats' campaign machine won the House -- and left them $18 million in debt
Source: NBC News
First came the blue wave, then came the red ink.
The new leader of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who is slated to be chosen Wednesday in the party's internal elections, will inherit $18 million in debt from this year's midterms, a source familiar with the group's finances told NBC News.
Its common for campaigns and party committees to finish election cycles in the hole as they throw everything they have and then some at an election, but the $18 million will have to be made up through fundraising before the new chairman can start building a warchest for the next election cycle.

For example:
Nancy Pelosi still has $1.3M
Schumer still has over $9M and won't run again for four years
Sanders has more than $5M and won't run again for six years
Gillibrand has more than $10M and won't run again for six years
Warren has $14M and won't run again for six years
There are many others in similar positions, and most Democrats (not all unfortunately) contribute a lot to the DNC and other Democratic committees.
So, this "$18M debt" is misleading and in the overall picture is inaccurate.

It's up to us to fight to win more seats in the house.

(67,782 posts)....and the DNC. Good Democrats "share the wealth", whether they're running for other office in the future or not. They know that their success depends upon the strength and success of the Democratic Party.
I'm sure Pelosi spent funds on many campaigns around the country. Many Democratic members of Congress do that too - I know John Larson (my Congressman) in some elections has wound up spending collectively more on other candidates' campaigns than his own.
There are many "pots" from which Democrats dip over the course of campaigns, and hopefully it all goes toward electing Democrats.

The NBC piece implies that Democrats are in debt, but overall they're not. It's kind of like someone with a $100K mortgage but $300K in savings. If one only looks at the mortgage, that person is "in debt", when in fact that person is not.
I'm not saying we should relax but things aren't as dire as that piece implies.

(94,519 posts)One of the key jobs of the DCCC is twisting arms of reluctant House members to pay dues and make contributions.
George II
(67,782 posts)...by the DCCC from campaign committees:
Pelosi $1,311,000
Hoyer $ 999,999 (probably a reason for holding back that $1!)
Sanchez $ 525,000
Neal $ 500,000
Crowley $500,000
Kiwet $410,000
and many many others.

(2,032 posts)We donated over a hundred million for the election. Now time to pay the debt off, and get ready for 2020. We have more seats to flip, and 235 to defend.
Please help.

(7,077 posts)A SMALL GROUP of billionaire-backed Democrats, part of the so-called Problem Solvers Caucus in Congress, has launched a last-ditch effort that threatens to derail Rep. Nancy Pelosis election as House speaker.
Theyve framed their challenge to Pelosi, a California Democrat, in terms of good government and high-minded bipartisanship. Yet the force behind their campaign is one of the most toxic and notorious partisan warriors the Democratic Party has produced in the past three decades: political and corporate consultant Mark Penn.
The Problem Solvers Caucus is made up of 12 Democrats and 12 Republicans; nine of the Democrats have publicly committed to opposing Pelosi on the House floor if she doesnt meet their demands for House rules changes largely aimed at legislatively empowering Republicans. Combined with the holdouts from the last putsch effort, there would be enough votes to thwart Pelosi.
