Ryan casts doubt on 'bizarre' California election results

Weeks after House Republicans lost their majority, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday cast serious doubts about the bizarre election system in California, where it appears that seven GOP-held seats will flip to Democratic control.
The California election system just defies logic to me, Ryan said during a Washington Post event.
We were only down 26 seats the night of the election and three weeks later, we lost basically every California race. This election system they have I cant begin to understand what ballot harvesting is.
It was a remarkable comment from the retiring Speaker of the House, who until now had not joined President Trump and other Republicans who have complained about what they believed were election irregularities in places like Florida and California.

(10,890 posts)If we did cheat in California, it still wouldnt make up for all the cheating that a Republican SOS and Governor has done in so many states like Georgia and Florida.

(10,500 posts)Without it the GOP losses would have been at least 50 seats, probably more like 55.

(444 posts)We worked extremely hard in Ga 7th and lost by 400 votes. This district is very gerrymandered and Forsyth county saved woodall as their small section voted 2 to 1 for Woodall and took him over the hump. Gwinnett is now blue. We won every other race in our area and kicked out the republicans. When we were trying to get the last absentee and provisional ballots in Gwinnett counted, the county officials were extremely unhelpful who of course were all republicans.

(11,827 posts)...With a shrinking base, Republicans have to resort to voter suppression (Georgia, Florida, etc) or Gerrymandering.

I know, Republicans just hate that, especially when it means they lose.

(15,037 posts)CA significantly expanded mail-in voting this election cycle at the expense of in-person day-of voting (which traditionally can be counted/tabulated almost entirely on election day except for provisionals), and the mail-in ballots take longer to verify and count (more like provisionals). Also it is a long-standing, established trend in CA that mail-in ballots returned earlier in the voting window -- therefore processed by the end of election day -- skew more R and ballots returned later including on election day itself skew more D. So the final counts drifting more D after election day as the remaining ballots are counted is entirely in-line with historical precedent.
And unlike GA and FL and every other place controlled by GOP sh*tstains, we actually want to count every f*cking vote.

Anyway, if he bothered to go to the Secretary of State's website he would see that counting was always expected to take about a month. The GOP seems to forget that election results aren't official when their favorite broadcasters think they're going to be the first to make a pronouncement: they are official when the designated election officials say they are.

(24,397 posts)where 1. there are few votes to count and 2. voters tend to be conservatives.
Rs will always point to these early returns as proof they are winning.
In high-population states like CA, it takes much longer to count the millions of actual votes. Most of those votes are coming from urban areas. So naturally, it will appear that Rs are ahead or winning outright when the networks PROJECT the winner a few hours after the polls close. But projecting a winner based on the rural vote is not the same as counting the actual vote.
Ryan knows this, but he is counting on the fact that most R voters are stupid, and that they do not know this. All they see is I thought the R won weeks ago. Where are all these new votes for the D coming from?

(8,759 posts)1) You are from Wisconsin, why are you worrying about Californa's election system?
2) They have a non-partisan commission that draws its districts unlike the heavy gerrymandering in Wisconsin that kept Ryan in office until he stunk so bad that even that couldn't protect his job.
What a tool he is.
