GOP Rep. Chris Stewart Defends Trump on Khashoggi: 'Journalists Disappear' All the Time
Source: Daily Beast
During an interview with CNNs Brianna Keilar on Tuesday, Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) defended President Donald Trumps decision to stand by Saudi Arabia despite overwhelming evidence that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was behind the murder of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Admitting that its possible MBS ordered the killing, Stewart, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, said, We have to have to have a relationship with some players that we dont agree with. Journalists disappear all over the country. 20 journalists have been killed in Mexico. You don't think it happens in Turkey and China? Of course it does. And yet we have to have a relationship with these individuals, or with these countries. The comments echoed those made by Trump, who told reporters last month, Im not going to destroy the world economy and Im not going to destroy the economy for our country by being foolish with Saudi Arabia. Earlier on Tuesday, Republican senators who attended a classified briefing from CIA Director Gina Haspel on Khashoggis killing emerged more confident than ever that MBS was guilty. No question in my mind. I had almost no question before. I have no question whatsoever now, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) said, that the crown prince directed the murder and was kept apprised of the situation all the way through.

(3,186 posts)Sometimes we do have to accept that our allies will do things we don't like. You have to balance that thing with all the rest of the geopolitical situation. Over the years, the US has been pals with some really sketchy people simply because it was in our best interests. The old saying, "Sure, he's an asshole, but he's our asshole" illustrates this nicely.
So, for instance, we made some tepid condemnations of Saudi's human rights issues from time to time, but largely didn't make too much of a fuss about it. I can stomach that, though I'm not keen on it. But the cold-blooded murder of a journalist should be a bridge too far, particularly since not issuing a full-throated condemnation of Khashoggi's killing invites more of the same, from MBS and other autocratic rulers the world over.
There comes a time when one's friends or allies do something that can no longer be ignored or brushed under the rug. This is exactly that time, and continuing to look the other way makes Trump, and those who agree with him on this issue, complicit in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. One more moral failing for the heaping pile, I suppose.
