By The Associated Press

Wisconsin retailer Shopko is closing 39 stores in 19 states.

Shopko spokeswoman Michelle Hansen says each store employs 10 to 25 employees, putting the scope of job cuts at about 400 to nearly 1,000 positions. Liquidation sales begin Friday with the stores closing by the end of February.

The company was founded in 1962 and has its headquarters in Green Bay, according to the company's website. The department store chain operates about 360 stores in 24 states. Just one store in Shopko's home state will close. That store is in Mauston.

I don't go there all that often and it never seems overly busy to the point that Target and Wally World are but I do like shopping there from time to time. I hope the local store stays open and doesn't go the Mart of K route.

That is where I go.

Were you involved with the Democrats when you lived in Ogle County?

That one is NOT closing. The one in Dwight is closing.

It's not that busy - ever. The pharmacy bustles I guess because there's a retirement village across the street. On another note, I'm not sure if every Shopko provides this service but just to let folks know....my kiddo broke his foot a couple months ago. He had to wear a boot and use crutches for 8 weeks. Shopko rents crutches for $1! You go to the pharmacy, get crutches sized and they charge you $25...when you take the crutches back, you get a $24 refund. Pretty cool.

a while back and I can't say I'm surprised they aren't doing well. The place was kind of falling apart and looked pretty sad.
