Southwest Flight Skids Off Runway At Burbank Airport; FAA Initiates Groundstop
Source: CBS Los Angeles
BURBANK (CBSLA) A Southwest Airlines flight arriving at Burbank Airport from Oakland skidded off the runway after landing Thursday morning.
The jet was stopped by the airports Engineered Material Arresting System, which is designed to stop an aircraft that goes off the end of a runway.
The flight had 117 passengers on board.
Shortly after the incident, passengers were calmly seen disembarking the aircraft via an emergency slide.

Heavy rains are reportedly the cause.

(638 posts)like they did a few years ago. Glad to hear nobody was injured. Still my favorite SoCal airport.

(4,935 posts)Of course you would put a gas station basically at the end of an airport runway...makes perfect sense!

I know this system works, it has at Midway
We do learn.

(4,935 posts)Look at that....Gas was $1.59!!!!!!!
Oh, and the shot of the plane is cool too....reminds me of the scene in Airplane where the guy is checking the oil under the hood of the plane. LOL!

(94,548 posts)If you overshot the runway you'd end up in the bay. If you undershot it.....

(4,935 posts)A few degrees to the left and you land in downtown or the bay...over shoot it and you are in the Marine Corp Recruit Depot. A few degrees to the right and you land on Interstate 5 or residential/commercial areas.

(4,935 posts)San Diego has only 1 runway and it is the 3rd busiest in the world, even with no departures between 11:30pm & 6:30am.

(36,827 posts)Even on a good day a 737 needs around 5,000 of runway to land. They would be required to factor in a multiplier for the wet conditions and for carrying passengers in a scheduled airline operation. The runway is only 5,800 long.
Not a good time to buy Southwest stock.

n engineered materials arrestor system, engineered materials arresting system (EMAS), or arrester bed[1] is a bed of engineered materials built at the end of a runway to reduce the severity of the consequences of a runway excursion. Engineered materials are defined in FAA Advisory Circular No 150/5220-22B as "high energy absorbing materials of selected strength, which will reliably and predictably crush under the weight of an aircraft". While the current technology involves lightweight, crushable concrete blocks, any material that has been approved to meet the FAA Advisory Circular can be used for an EMAS. The purpose of an EMAS is to stop an aircraft overrun with no human injury and minimal aircraft damage. The aircraft is slowed by the loss of energy required to crush the EMAS material. An EMAS is similar in concept to the runaway truck ramp made of gravel or sand. It is intended to stop an aircraft that has overshot a runway when there is an insufficient free space for a standard runway safety area (RSA). Multiple patents have been issued on the construction and design on the materials and process.
