Two Scandinavian tourists killed in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains were the victims of a terrorist attack, prosecutors believe. One man has been arrested following the discovery on Monday of the bodies of 24-year-old Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway.

One of the women had been beheaded, a source told AFP. A suspect in the murder was arrested in Marrakech on Tuesday, and was known to have ties to radical Islamist terror networks. Police are hunting for three other suspects. Boubker Sabik, a police spokesman, said terrorism was suspected and that the three suspects on the run had been "identified and a search for them is under way by all the security services".

One of the three had "a court record linked to terrorist acts", he said, while the prosecutor general's office said the man in custody also belonged to an extremist group.

"Radical Islam is not ruled out, due to the profile of the suspect arrested and of the three men wanted," a source close to the investigation told AFP.

Before Louisa Vesterager Jespersen left for a holiday in Morocco, she posted on Facebook asking for advice.

“Dear friends, I’m going to Morocco in December,” the 24-year-old student from Denmark wrote. “Any of you guys who’s around by then or any mountain friends who knows something about Mount Toubkal?”

On Monday, her body was found near that mountain, a popular tourist destination for hikers visiting the North African country. Her friend, Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway, was also found dead. Agence France-Presse reported that at least one of the women had been decapitated. “This is a case of an unusually bestial killing of two totally innocent young women,” the Danish intelligence service said in a statement Thursday.

The men in the video claim the murders were in revenge for events in Syria.

The mother of one of two Scandanavian hikers found killed in Morocco has reportedly been sent disturbing images. The bodies of Louisa Vesterager Jespersen and Maren Ueland were discovered with stab wounds to the neck on Monday at a campsite near the tourist village of Imlil.

Irene Ueland, the mother of Norwegian Maren Ueland, shared an image on Facebook of her 28-year-old daughter with her large dog in tribute to the young woman. The post has amassed thousands of comments in the past few days, with countless people expressing their condolences.

But News.com.au reports the grieving mother was also bombarded with uncensored images on Facebook, which allegedly showed the severed and partially severed heads of the two women. According to Associated Press, a plane carrying the bodies of 28-year-old Norwegian Maren Ueland and 24-year-old Louisa Vesterager Jespersen took off Friday from Casablanca for Denmark.

The Norwegian news agency NTB said Ueland’s autopsy would be performed in her home country. Nine more people have been arrested in Morocco for connections to the four initial suspects in the killing of two Scandinavian university students in a remote corner of the Atlas Mountains, Moroccan authorities said Friday. A total of 13 men have been detained after the murder of the female hikers from Denmark and Norway.
