Senate Republicans quickly rejected President Trump's push that they go "nuclear" and change Senate rules to eliminate the legislative filibuster in order to pass a funding bill with $5 billion for his wall on the Mexican border.
"Ive long said that eliminating the legislative filibuster would be a mistake," said outgoing Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) in a string of tweets explaining his position.
"Its whats prevented our country for decades from sliding toward liberalism..................................
Retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) pledged that he wouldn't vote to nix the 60-vote filibuster in order to clear money for the border.
"The Senate filibuster is about the only mechanism left in Washington that brings the parties together. Deploying the nuclear option would blow that up. I will not vote to do it," Flake said.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who also is retiring early next month, said he would "continue to follow rules relative to legislation as they exist today as I finish my term."
And Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, added that he would also not vote to use the nuclear option.

(260 posts)I was told long ago by a Vietnam era Navy vet, who did river patrols, that if he was working down by the docks when a chief petty officer started watching other boats being loaded and said "Watch this shit", he knew that it was probably time to duck...
I'm more than willing to watch (bring on the popcorn!) but where do we duck while they explode?

(2,367 posts)Like hijacking the Supreme Court nomination awayf from Obama. They dared The Democratic Leadership to do anything about it and they did nothing about it. Barely even whines.
I assumed Republics would do the same here this morning. Say just, we're doing this just once for Christmas. We're changing the rules. What you Dems gonna do about it, anyway?

(36,775 posts)Republicans have the power to pass the $5billion Trump wants.
If they refuse to do it, it is their choice.
But they are falsely blaming democrats for their own actions.

(17,911 posts)The Senate likes their rules, and they're certainly not going there with a tough 2020 election coming up for the Rethugs. We'll have a shutdown. People will get hurt. Rethugs and shitler will be drug over the coals all through the Christmas season. And once again, the reichwing takes stupidity to a level never before achieved by humans.

Now at 36 YES, 43 NO (1:13 PM)
Now at 40 YES, 45 NO (1:24 PM)
Now at 43 YES, 45 NO (1:49 PM)
Why do some Senators have to wait until the last minute to vote.

(16,178 posts)They care nothing about the people or their country. Only party. I wish I had some confidence in them, but their words mean nothing to me. Only their actions. I hope I am wrong, but they are what they are and will never be anything more until they have gained everything for the few and trashed the place for the rest of us.
