Fishermen rescued by cruise ship in 'Christmas miracle'

Source: BBC News

Two fishermen have been rescued by a cruise ship after being stranded for 20 days at sea.

Royal Caribbean's Empress of the Seas found them after a "miracle" chance encounter en route to Jamaica.

The fishermen were pulled off course by strong winds, while a storm had also diverted the cruise ship from its planned route, Royal Caribbean Chief Meteorologist James Van Fleet said.

Both fishermen later disembarked in Jamaica to receive medical attention.

They don't dump garbage in our waters, they educate their passengers on how to behave on shore, and are generally good stewards of our wildlife.

SALUT!

They were caught red handed in the late 1990s fouling the ocean. Whatever they are doing now is because they have been considered a scourge on the environment and are being monitored closely, at least up until the Trumpanzees took over NOAA.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, the world's second largest cruise line, has agreed to pay a record $18m fine (£11.4m) for illegally dumping tonnes of waste oil and chemicals into US waters.
The Miami-based company, which is currently building the world's largest cruise ship, admitted to 21 counts of deliberately dumping oily bilge water and hazardous chemicals from its dry cleaning shops and its printing and photo processing equipment.

The fine was so large because the crew lied to the US coast guard when asked about the slicks trailing its ships. It also comes after evidence was found that it had indulged in a fleet-wide conspiracy to dump oil into US coastal waters.

It was the second time the company had paid the penalty for pollution. Last year it was fined $9m (£5.7m).

Royal Caribbean has agreed to operate under a court-supervised environmental compliance plan for the next five years and will also allocate $6m (£3.8m) of its penalty to community service for the US fish and wildlife foundation and the national park service.

Last year the world's largest cruise line, Carnival, was fined $2m (£1.3m) for discharging oil waste off Alaska.

Our laws are TOUGH - and they know they'll get caught. Carnival doesn't really give a damn. They will. I wish ALL of them complied - we rely heavily on tourism, don't mind the dumb question ("where are all the igloos&quot and generally appreciate them.

Royal is the best of a bad situation.
