UPDATED: ICE drops off almost 200 more migrants in El Paso

Source: CBS News

UPDATED ON: DECEMBER 26, 2018 / 6:01 AM / CBS NEWS

One-hundred-eighty-six more migrants were released in downtown El Paso, Texas by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Christmas Day, reports the CBS affiliate there, KDBC-TV. That came after approximately 400 were released in the southwest Texas city in the two days before Christmas.

Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke, who represents El Paso, said he'd been told some 500 more would be released there Wednesday.

Local nonprofit groups told the station the key difference Tuesday was that they were notified in advance by ICE of the mass release, something the groups and O'Rourke said didn't happen previously.

As a result, the nonprofits were a bit more prepared for the large influx.

ICE is not doing this out of kindness.
It's about creating a crisis for a Democrat in a newly won district.

Are these people being released now free to go wherever they want to? Can they now board a bus to unite with friends or family in the US?
Why is this happening?

I wish them all well and safe travels to their next destination.

Why were they in custody if they're legal migrants? Why were they released in USA if they're illegal migrants? Why release migrants at a bus station?

They probably have been given dates that they have to appear in immigration court but are free until then - along the lines of the so-called "catch and release" concept.

The migrants traveled sometimes hundreds of miles to get to Texas to live and work in the US.

ICE just released them in Texas. Wasn't that what the migrant workers wanted in the first place?

It explains that they have no legal basis to be here. ICE is trying to refrain from detaining them longer than legally allowed.

The community has few resources. ICE is not being given proper guidance by the government. Of course it is an issue, no matter how you feel about the migrants.

If so, why?

Neither ICE nor the community have a good way of handling the large number of migrants. The article points this out.

The practice of releasing a migrant to the community while he or she awaits hearings in immigration court, as an alternative to holding them in immigration detention.

No one has a good answer here. No solutions or guidelines are being provided by our government.

They were just dumped off at the Geyhound station.

There are several charitable organizations that are usually notified so that they can be there and help the people.

The agencies weren't notified. So the people were just dropped off with no coordinating help from the agencies.

Not everyone in this thread has done that.

I think some people here like to argue just for the sake of it.
