Graham to Pelosi: 'No Wall Money, No Deal'

Source: The Hill

BY JULIEGRACE BRUFKE - 12/28/18 12:07 PM EST

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), an on-again-off-again ally of President Trump, made it clear he would not support legislation to reopen the government that doesn't include funding for a wall along the southern border.

"To Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats: No Wall Money, No Deal," Graham tweeted on Friday.

His tweet comes as talks have stalled between Democratic leaders and the White House.

Republicans have repeatedly accused Democrats of failing to take negotiations seriously. The administration recently floated $2.1 billion in border security funding, which was rejected by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y,). Democrats have said they are not willing to go beyond their $1.3 billion offer.

would rather blow up the government than to admit he has lost and has nothing left to stand on. So he'd rather blow up the ship than to surrender. Trump's not a strategist by any measure. He's a psychopath and a whiny little bitch. He's the kid we all knew, who would turn over the checkerboard when he's one move away from losing, rather than accept defeat. Unfortunately Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Dems doesn't live on CRAZY like Trump does. They know that there are real people out there who could go weeks without a paycheck and that's just not acceptable to them.

he wants to leave a wall, sort of as a monument to him and his presidency.

It ain't happening. Pelosi is the new sheriff in town.

Besides who needs the ancient and expensive technology of a wall when an array of much less expensive combination of sensors, drones, GPS tech, cameras, laser projection, etc. in conjunction with Border Patrol agents are available.

We don't need no stinkin' wall.

In addition, why are we talking about American Taxpayers paying for the wall at all? I thought Mexico was supposed to pay for that.

for it.

We should make additional demands like NO open hunting season on grizzly bears, NO more prospecting/mining in Bears Ears National Monument, NO relaxation of water quality regulations, and leave ANWR alone. Then we will give you your $2.1b.

These issues are not based on sound policy differences anyway, they were only changed because originally a Black President favored them, and it was a racist low-life POS that would reverse his decisions solely based on skin color.

I think DACA, Mueller protection and ACA fix would be well worth it for the country. We trade some real protection for America & American workers for 2.1 billion in fake protection. This is better than a clean CR because we get things which we otherwise would never be able to pass in the upcoming congress that are really important..

They get what they want: $2.1 billion real dollars that day to build a money pit that wil cost us a lot more than that $2.1 billion that actually achieves nothing.

All DACA kids would get is some vague promises and a fist full of lawsuits and foot dragging for years as republicans and the trump administration does everything they can to resist implementing it. Or republicans make it so conditional that if a DACA kid gets so much as a speeding ticket they can get deported.

Republicans are shit stains and all a “deal” will do is give trump his fucking wall and everyone else a fist full of broken promises and a bunch of ifs, ands and maybes about what they might be able to do about it.

the "adults in the room" step up and end this? At some point, everyone holding out like toddlers - and that includes Dems - are going to start feeling the wrath of the population. I'm not saying that Pelosi or the Dems need to cave, but it is looking more and more like the rethugs' strategy is to just sit on their collective hands and hold their collective breaths until they turn blue. All the while, they will be blaming the holdout on Pelosi. And there are enough people in this country who will begin to believe them. Jeebus.

The rethugs have been saying for almost 40 years on now, that they'd just as soon as whittle down the size of the U.S. government such that they could "drown it in the bathtub." They don't give a shit about the government and even less than that about the people who work within it not being paid. They've been working pretty much full time for 40 years to make it all go away anyway and furlough every person working in it.

Did you mention that Mexico is supposed to be paying for the wall, and not the American taxpayer.

So if our Dems in government want to be "the adults in the room", they will continue to insist that that was, indeed, The Deal. Trump can happily have his wall when the Mexican check for the full purchase price clears the bank, and not a second sooner.

There shouldn't even be any debate about this.

and thus isn't much of a solution to anything. In fact, it arguably would play into Trump's hands:

The Senate would pass it and Trump won’t veto it. Instead he would sign it while declaring that by doing so he is showing that he really doesn’t want the government to be shutdown and is willing to give the Democrats more time to work with him on a solution. At the same time, however, he’ll assert that this is a one time event and that he won’t sign another extension or funding bill if he doesn’t get what he wants.

I think the better strategy is to pass two bills in the House: a funding bill for the entire year without any border security money and a separate bill with the $1.3 billion in border security funds the Democrats have previously offered. Let McConnell decide if he is willing to take the heat for blocking one or both of those bills and if he doesn’t test whether Trump is crazy enough to veto either or both.

Another fact is the Senate voted unanimously (that would include Graham) to send a clean CR (continuing res) to the House just last week before xmas.

The new House majority will pass a clean CR, the same one the Senate sent over that was torpedoed by Ryan and co, and send it back to the Senate. Shumer will endorse it and McConnell will provide the GOP votes to pass it, probably by a veto-proof margin.

Graham can fillibuster the CR if he likes, but then he will also have to assume the burden of being the one keeping the gov't closed. He can refer to Gringrich about how being the face of a gov't shut down worked out for him.
