Federal workers union sues Trump admin over government shutdown

Source: The Hill

One of the country’s largest unions representing federal workers is suing the Trump administration over the government shutdown, claiming that it is illegal to require employees to work without pay.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) union released a statement on Monday announcing its lawsuit as the shutdown stretches past a week.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, alleges that the federal government is in violation of the law by requiring some federal workers, many of which are represented by the union, to work without pay during the shutdown. AFGE also denounced the shutdown earlier this month.

“Our members put their lives on the line to keep our country safe,” J. David Cox Sr., president of AFGE, said in the release. “Requiring them to work without pay is nothing short of inhumane. Positions that are considered ‘essential’ during a government shutdown are some of the most dangerous jobs in the federal government.”

Late fees on loans, damage to credit rating, possibly even eviction and moving costs, utility shut-off fees.

And how do you still come up with transportation and child care costs to go to work every day?

Per the Fair Labor Standard Act Workers are entitled to recoup double pay on minimum wages and overtime pay not paid. IE, they can collect $7.25 in damages for each hour worked up until 40, and 50% of their hourly wage for hours above 40. Roughly 25,000 workers joined a class action suit against the federal government following the 2013 shutdown and won.

I'm sick of these right wing nut jobs bashing federal, state and local government workers. These people have chosen to work in service to their fellow human beings.

The federal workers should be paid when they work so they aren't victimized by Republican ideology.
