Seventy-six percent of Americans who tuned in to President Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night approved of the speech he gave. Just 24 percent disapproved.
As is often the case in State of the Union addresses, the people who watched tonight's speech leaned more towards the president's own party, at least compared to Americans overall. In the latest CBS national poll released last month, 25 percent of Americans identified themselves as Republicans. Among those who watched Tuesday night's address, that figure was 43 percent, and Republicans helped bolster the overall approval of the address.
And while 97 percent of Republicans approved of the speech, far fewer Democrats who tuned in did (30 percent). Most independents did approve.

THE QUESTION THEY DID NOT ASK: Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president? That question would have shown that many of those who dissapprove did not 'tune in'. 71% of Americans do NOT believe there is a crisis at the southern border.

(47,275 posts)Many sane people chose NOT to watch the speech. This poll does not really tell us much.

(30,613 posts)Why would I subject myself to that?

(47,275 posts)but when it ended, I saw the last part of Trump's speech. I really hadn't intended to watch it, but something attracted my attention unfortunately. I try to avoid watching Trump knowing there will be highlights and clips later on. That's about as much as I usually can handle. On top of everything else he is an awful public speaker.

(1,201 posts)Then we would see how many don't care if he lies as long as he lies in their favor. There is no border crisis so why do so many surveyed just go along with this lie?

(6,373 posts)Most people who watched it were supporters, thus of course the approval numbers are going to be high among those who tuned in.

(15,297 posts)there will be NO context.
There will be NO discussion of "who watched"
There will be NO look at who was polled (unless you go to the fine print).
Stand by for NON-STOP 24/7 76% Approved of President Shit for Brains bullshit from the MSM
Hell, by the time their done, they'll fucking drop the "Approved of the Speech" and just run with "Donnie Shit for Brains has a remarkable 76% approval rating"

(7,142 posts)as AOC said about the speech, there wasn't one concrete policy proposal. The speech was nothing more than a campaign rally.

(4,341 posts)I have to think the poll is useless, I doubt that many democrats watched it. I know I didn't, and what I am reading of what was said does not surprise me.

(3,051 posts)It was like a speech supporting puppies.
Everyone likes puppies. Most of the things he talked about were solid. For example, relating the story of the Shoah victim who was literally on a train to death when the Americans stormed the train was fricking awesome event and made me proud to be American. I worked in Dachau post WWII processing Nazis. Im a Jew. Its a very personal moment to me. I cried.
And the economy is very good.
Freeing ourselves from Mid East oil is fantastic.
Criminal justice reform was great.
His moves against drug companies were good.
So, from that perspective, it was great.
But had little to nothing to do with Trump.
And that last line is our point.

(6,373 posts)The people polled was the audience and since the audience was primarily Republicans, they're going to get the majority of the influence.

(6,373 posts)It's like walking into a Cracker Barrel and polling everyone on whether or not they like Cracker Barrel. When the audience your polling is already slanted, you're going to get slanted results.
