Pro-Russian Coast Guard lieutenant arrested with hit list of liberal senators wanted to establish a white homeland

Seamus Hughes of the George Washington Program on Extremism tweeted Wednesday that a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was arrested on drugs and weapons charges. He noted that it seemed like an everyday event until court documents were published.
Christopher Paul Hasson was reportedly in contact with white supremacists and was developing a hit list of liberal senators he was aiming to attack.
Hint about the importance of the case was in the opening paragraph, said Hughes with a screen capture of the documents.

It's the radicalized Cuban exile model. No shortage of billionaire donors - or foreign VIPs - who would love to see these things happen here.

And I was amazed someone actually said it.

I want to know whos been protecting him, so that we can put that person in jail too.
As for the terrorist, he needs to be Terry Nichols next door neighbor in Superman.

(48,988 posts)While there is an element of mental deficiency in many cases like this (grandiosity, blind spots, believing fantasies), "mental illness" is not at the core of these crimes.
58Sunliner
(4,381 posts)It was no accident. He was planning on world destruction, which would have included himself. Just because someone is mentally ill does not mean he can be treated successfully, or that sympathy is appropriate. He belongs in a padded cell for the rest of his days. The malignant rage is projected.
Part of the problem is that we have allowed sociopaths in our society to dictate the norms of social engagement and thus we have a segment of society that feels emboldened/supported to act. I do not think it is coincidence. People like DT are normalized by extremes. This is how fascists take "middle" ground. Extreme threats and the denial that they are the product of a sick society.

(24,692 posts)If white nationalism is a mental illness (the far-right will laugh at our 'librul' take excusing a domestic terrorist who wanted to kill liberal politicians and journalists) we should feel sorry for him and help him get treatment for his mental illness.

Right now we are getting a flood of the mendacity of the Republican party. Cheating to win election.s. Distractions to blame the other side , gerrymandering, playing footsie with the Russians, floods of money thanks to a corrupt Supreme Court, culminating in McConnell refusing to seat Obamas choice, ramming through the alcoholic ,rapist Kavanaugh. It is now exploding in their faces for all to see.
I just hope we have enough decent people to clean up the mess, enough to have the guts to do what needs to be done.
I really do not enjoy feeling this way. When President Obama was elected I thought we had a bright future after the Bush debacle, but all the sharks are still there.

A 49-year-old active duty U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant arrested on gun and drug charges has been accused by federal prosecutors of being a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct. In a court filing, prosecutors showed the lieutenant has corresponded with known white supremacists and identified himself as a white nationalist who has advocated for focused violence in order to establish a white homeland.
Christopher Hasson, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was charged with possession of firearms and ammunition by an unlawful user or addict of controlled substances, and with possession of tramadol, but prosecutors in the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Maryland called those alleged offenses the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
Prosecutors said in court documents that Hasson stockpiled weapons and was planning a domestic terror attack targeting Democratic politicians and journalists. He wrote in a letter to a Neo-Nazi leader that he had been dreaming of ways to kill almost every last person on earth, prosecutors said. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Wisdom wrote, the defendant intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.
Prosecutors did not say if Hasson had a specific date for an attack planned. In the court filing, prosecutors also wrote that Hasson was a fan of Anders Breivik, the far-right terrorist who killed 77 people in 2011.

(638 posts)Not just political figures on the Democratic Party but also members of the media. Chris Hayes has three young children who would have faint memories of their father if they were successful. That's not even getting into the attack on the political system that rivals what happened to Lincoln's cabinet. And this is the second time this has been attempted in this presidency.

(50,553 posts)Here's what I want to know:
He sent himself a letter after the Charlottesville rally. In it he wrote:
I am a long time White Nationalist, having been a skinhead 30 plus years ago before my time in the military. I have served in 3 branches currently serving as an Officer (never attended college) with 2 years till I hit mandatory retirement at 30
.
Did this individual manage to slip through 28 years of service and many rounds of investigation without his extremist background coming to light, or is he a GOP plant?

(26 posts)anything in the article, besides the headline, stating anything about this guy being "pro-Russian".
Was the "pro-Russian" tossed in as clickbait or am I missing something?
Regardless, all military, intelligence agencies and police forces across the country are filled with wannabe Rambos who have fantasies of fighting a racial war. The few who are apprehended and charged with a crime is paltry compared to the number of them actually out there - their hate and threats of violence are often considered "free speech".
