Trump pressures GOP senators ahead of emergency declaration vote: 'Be strong and smart'

Source: The Hill

BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO - 02/25/19 08:31 AM EST

President Trump on Monday put pressure on GOP senators ahead of a vote on his national emergency declaration, urging them to be "strong and smart" and avoid falling into "the Democrats “trap.”

Trump earlier this month declared a national emergency to divert funds from various agencies to use to construct his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico Border. The move came after the president signed a spending bill that fell well short of offering the $5.7 billion he had been demanding.

The House is expected to vote on a resolution on Tuesday that would block the declaration.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a Thursday statement that Senate Democrats would introduce a companion resolution "soon." Democrats would need to win over four Republicans to get the necessary votes to block the move, but it would face a veto from Trump.

But his framing is complete horsepucky. Republican Senators need to be strong and smart and resist caving into the Trump power grab that completely violates Article 1 of the Constitution. Our Founders gave us 3 co-equal branches of government and they choose to give the legislature the power of the purse. Do the Republican Senators have it in them to be strong and smart and avoid the trap Trump is setting for them by claiming the vote will not be about separation of power. I'm sure Lindsey Graham will not be strong and smart - he never is. Will any of the Republican men join the women and be strong and smart. We should know soon.

if the vote doesn't pass the Senate. This matters to the law suits that are filed. The SC may decline to take the case and leave the matter up to Congress. If that happens, we lose.

It wouldn't be as bad if it passes the Senate and Trump vetoes it and then the bill fails.

If he can con them into allowing him to be closer to absolute power without anything to stop him by declarations , he wants that badly now, then claim one after another emergencies to use and he will try to use martial law if they stand up against him. that's how he does, he abuses any powers he does have to eventually bypass them with next. He' capable of doing anything to escape justice with , and to get absolute power with. That's what fascists like him do.
