HANOI, Vietnam (AP) President Donald Trump said he walked away from his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un because Kim demanded the U.S. lift all of its sanctions, a claim that North Koreas delegation called a rare news conference in the middle of the night to deny.
So whos telling the truth? In this case, it seems that the North Koreans are. And its a demand they have been pushing for weeks in lower-level talks.
Trumps much-anticipated meeting with Kim, held in the Vietnamese capital Wednesday and Thursday, ended abruptly and without the two leaders signing any agreements. Trump spoke with reporters soon after the talks broke down and said the dispute over sanctions was the deal breaker.
Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldnt do that, he said. We had to walk away from that.

(3,299 posts)According to Tae, Bolton embarrassed Kim Jong Un with the second secret nuclear facility issue. I don't necessarily agree with Tae's analysis. Kim's apparent confusion at the question resulted in in the DPRK Foreign Minster, Ri Yong Ho, sitting next to Kim stopping the talks. That's where they ended according to Tae's account (based on?)
Kim could have been surprised for a couple of other reasons. Maybe this issue wasn't on the agenda for instance in the "small deal," scenario and wasn't addressed by the working level representatives. Or the facility doesn't exist, or Kim is lying about it. Tae suggests the latter.
Choi Son Hui the veteran nuclear negotiator, said it was her feeling that the US wasn't even seriously interested in the talks this time around.
Tae made some remark on the extended interview on Channel A News that the CIA probably would have cheered during the gotcha John Bolton moment or words to the effect. Why he would say this one could speculate.
