Federal prosecutors in Maryland indicted a former Baltimore Police sergeant on Tuesday for planting evidence, WBAL-TV reports.
Former Sgt. Keith Gladstone was charged with conspiracy to deprive civil rights, conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States and witness tampering.
In light of the indictment, the Baltimore Police Department announced Tuesday that three other officers would be suspended and investigated by the Internal Affairs department, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Gladstone is accused of planting a BB gun on Demetric Simon, who had been intentionally run over by Sgt. Wayne Jenkins.

(46,327 posts)He said the cops in Baltimore are so corrupt they stink on ice.
And he says corrupt cops there are not the exception, they are the rule.
No wonder he got out when he could.

(2,166 posts)It sounds as if the Sergeant to who was indicted for planting the gun was " intentionally run over by fellow officer" which is why I clicked.
The last sentence of the post clarifies, but I had to look for it because I was expecting something else.

(38,421 posts)That is why he did it. There was no worry that he could be indicted or arrested. He was sergeant in the police force, and I guess he had gotten away with other crimes like this. I hope he is convicted and faces in prison those that he sent to prison.

(38,421 posts)There is no doubt in my mind that these cops never imagined they would be caught. A sergeant in the police force of a major city knows the consequences. He is sure he will not be caught, that is why he does it. In this case, Gladstone is covering for a friend, another sergeant Wayne Jenkins. Jenkins was sentenced to 25 years in jail for the crimes he did as a cop. So both were sergeants in the Baltimore Police Department, and were relatively sure they would get away with any crimes they committed. As sergeants they had been around a long time. Seen a whole lot, and gained insight into the "system." That is why they had the arrogance to do what they did. Who would catch them and who would punish them?..
..Note: it was the federal government that charged Gladstone, not the Baltimore Police Department.

Jenkins was sentenced to 25 years in prison for multiple crimes, including drug dealing and robbery, as head of the department's elite Gun Trace Task Force, a nine-member squad that allegedly spent years robbing citizens, extorting drug dealers and filing false reports, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
...
Gladstone retired from the department in 2012, returned a year later and retired again in 2017. If convicted, Gladstone faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, prosecutors said.

Planting the gun was standard procedure for this mob - DU a year ago:

By the time they finished investigating, eight members of the elite Gun Trace Task Force had been charged with crimes ranging from racketeering to robbery.
You want robbery? How about the story of the corrupt squad stopping a drug dealer during a traffic stop and robbing him of $6,500, then going to the mans home without a warrant and taking another $100,000 out of a safe? Sgt. Wayne Jenkins would ask suspected drug dealers, If you could put together a crew of guys and rob the biggest drug dealer in town, who would it be?
...
And then theres the revelation that the supervisor of the unit instructed officers to carry a toy gun just in case they found themselves in a jam and needed to plant one. When one of the officers, Marcus Tayor, was arrested, officials couldnt figure out why he had a toy gun in his glove compartment.
...
I know what youre thinking: After the death of Freddie Gray and the discovery of multiple officers who planted drugs on suspects, the Baltimore Police Department is one of the most corrupt departments in the country.
Or maybe Baltimore is indicative of police departments all over the country. Maybe theyre like the one in Cleveland, which hired the cop who killed Tamir Rice after he was fired by another police department. Or like the South Carolina state trooper who said he shot a man because he was moving erratically while reaching for his wallet. Or when a paid police informant planted cocaine in a store owners shop.
