A homeless veteran pleaded guilty Wednesday in New Jersey federal court to conspiring with a woman and her then-boyfriend to concoct a feel-good story that helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars from a GoFundMe campaign.
The veteran, Johnny Bobbitt, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The woman, Kate McClure, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Bobbitt, McClure, and her then-boyfriend Mark D'Amico, who still all face state charges in Burlington County, New Jersey, were accused of fabricating a feel-good story about Bobbitt coming to McClures aid when she ran out of gas along the highway and gave her his last $20.

(28,789 posts)i didn't donate to that. i have from time to time given to strangers when touched by their stories. i am gullible. it's a shame that because of their fraud, people like me will hesitate before sending money that someone would probably really need.

(19,200 posts)they'll receive at least twice as much prison time as Paul Manafort. They should, but that just shows how ridiculously lenient Manafort's sentence was from that asshole judge.

(1,773 posts)I'll admit to still feeling sympathy for the Vet. Perhaps his desperate situation was a primary factor in him doing this. I don't know.
However, the other two? I think they're the scum of the earth.
