Maine GOP mayor resigns after calling elderly black people 'antique farm equipment'

Shane Bouchard, the Republican mayor of the second largest city in Maine, stepped down after leaked emails and texts showed he joked that elderly black people were “antique farm equipment,” The Sun Journal reports.

In private messages that were released by a woman, Heather Everly Berube, who alleged to have had an affair with Bouchard during his campaign, the Maine Republican reportedly told a racist joke.

“All my jokes are quite racist lol,” he reportedly said in a text, later adding: “What do you call 2 old black people sitting on your front lawn.”

“Antique farm equipment,” he said.

Lewiston Mayor Shane Bouchard announces resignation

Lewiston Mayor Shane Bouchard announced his resignation Friday, a day after police said they were investigating him.

Police said they were conducting a joint investigation with the Maine Attorney General's Office regarding allegations made by Heather Berube Everly at the Lewiston City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Police did not say specifically what they were investigating.

In the meeting, Berube Everly called on councilors to oust Bouchard, a Republican.

Berube Everly said she was the source of emails used against Bouchard's Democratic opponent in the 2017 election for mayor. She was having an affair with Bouchard at the time.
