Saudi women's rights activists go on trial in Riyadh

Several Saudi Arabian women’s rights activists stood trial on Wednesday for the first time since a group of them were detained last year in a case that has intensified scrutiny of the kingdom’s human rights record after the murder of a prominent journalist.

Loujain al-Hathloul, Aziza al-Yousef, Eman al-Nafjan and Hatoon Al-Fassi were among around 10 women appearing before the criminal court in the capital, Riyadh, where charges would be presented against them, court president Ibrahim al Sayari said.

He was speaking to reporters and diplomats, who were barred from attending the session.

The women are among about a dozen prominent activists who were arrested last May in the weeks before a ban on women driving cars in the conservative kingdom was lifted.

Ten women's rights activists have gone on trial in Saudi Arabia in a case that has raised questions about the kingdom's human rights record.

Those who appeared included Loujain al-Hathloul, a prominent figure in the campaign to win Saudi women the right to drive. She was detained last May.

A UK-based Saudi rights organisation, ALQST, said they were charged under the country's cyber-crimes law.

Demands for the women's release have come from around the world.

Al-Ghomgham is one of six Saudi human rights defenders standing trial at the country's infamous Specialized Criminal Court, five of whom are facing possible death sentences. The court has a history of unfair trials resulting in executions.

I don't think the king would execute then, but crown prince MBS would do it in a New York minute.
