New York Charges Paul Manafort With 16 Crimes. If He's Convicted, Trump Can't Pardon Him.
Source: New York Times
Paul J. Manafort, President Trump's former campaign chairman, has been charged in New York with mortgage fraud and more than a dozen other state felonies, the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., said Wednesday, an effort to ensure he will still face prison time if Mr. Trump pardons him for his federal crimes.
News of the indictment came shortly after Mr. Manafort was sentenced to his second federal prison term in two weeks; he now faces a combined sentence of more than seven years for tax and bank fraud and conspiracy in two related cases brought by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.
The president has broad power to issue pardons for federal crimes, but has no such authority in state cases. While Mr. Trump has not said he intends to pardon his former campaign chairman, he has often spoken of his power to pardon and has defended Mr. Manafort on a number of occasions, calling him a "brave man."
The new state charges against Mr. Manafort are contained in a 16-count indictment that alleges a yearlong scheme in which he falsified business records to obtain millions of dollars in loans, Mr. Vance said in a news release after the federal sentencing.

Note that these are STATE charges separate from what has just concluded with the sentencing for the federal charges.

There's also the possibility of New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, and possibly even Connecticut crimes that will have to be addressed.

Some of the 16 charges may overlap the Federal charges, so they may be thrown out, but most of them are state charges unrelated to the Federal cases - mortgage fraud, probably bank fraud, wire fraud, etc.
BumRushDaShow
(128,958 posts)and am not sure where the legislature is with that. But it could be these charges aren't overlapping because unless/until the law is changed, it would be useless to bring any charges identical to what was already charged by the feds (even those where he was acquitted).

(2,895 posts)NY Lawmakers Expected to Pass Bill Closing Double Jeopardy Loophole--New York Attorney General Letitia James is expected to send a bill to the state Legislature to close the so-called double jeopardy loophole.
By Dan M. Clark | March 12, 2019
<<Lawmakers in New York have struck an agreement on legislation that would close the so-called double jeopardy loophole, a section of state law that currently precludes state prosecutors from bringing the same charges against an individual whos received a presidential pardon of federal crimes.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a main proponent of the legislation, confirmed the agreement in a conversation with reporters at the state capitol Tuesday, saying lawmakers are expected to pass the bill at some point over the next two to three weeks.
We do have an agreement with both houses. We anticipate that the bill will be passed in the coming weeks, James said. We would urge the state Legislature to move the bill.
The legislation would be particularly important if future associates or family members of President Donald Trump are indicted as a result of the probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller III, which is expected to be transmitted to U.S. Attorney General William Barr sometime soon.
The law would not apply to individuals already tried and convicted, such as former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort Jr., because the so-called double jeopardy clause attaches at the start of a trial.>>

(81,260 posts)oops - I mean lawyer - off his spin cycle. The guy tried again to rope in a no collusion whine (that NEVER came up and was NEVER part of this trial or these charges). But the crowd was NOT having it. Shortstopped him and drove him away from his little impromptu press conference, and off toward his car.
That kind of thing is what still gives me hope.

(5,269 posts)Not sure that NY can proceed with a trial while Manafort is in prison. So if they can only proceed to trial, conviction and sentencing if he's out of Fed prison, Manafort might prefer staying in Fed instead of ending up in State penitentiary.

that his lawyer immediately AGAIN says no collusion even though jackson says it wasn't about collusion means they were talking/working for trump.
manafort was smart enough to make sure the serious collusion stuff between he and trump was private without don jr, or bannon, or even gates. manafort's pardon is about stuff manafort is confident no one else was directly involved in so pardon could also involve payment, free legal, we won't blow up your family, etc.
and then there is the jury pool trump and limbaugh have been peeing and crapping in for 2 years, which already produced one hung jury
and then there are other republican judges like ellis who can be partisan, intimidated, and or bought
