CHURCH AND STATE Unvaccinated Kentucky Student Sues Over School's Chickenpox Ban

Source: The Daily Beast

A Kentucky high schooler is suing the state over a policy that bars students who have not been vaccinated against chickenpox—saying the shots would violate his religious beliefs because they were cultured in cells from aborted fetuses. Jerome Kunkel, 18, attends Assumption Academy in Walton, where a third of the student body has been sickened with the highly contagious virus, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The health department ordered unvaccinated students to stay away until three weeks after the last diagnosis. In his lawsuit, Kunkel said he opposes the vaccine “due to its being derived from aborted fetal cells.” While the Catholic Church has advocated for the development of vaccines that are not dependent on fetal cells, it also says the current vaccines—which are propagated in cells obtained decades ago—should not be rejected.

Sun Mar 17, 2019, 02:24 PM
Mar 2019

There is good reason for the vaccine. It's not only children who are affected by this.

I never had Chickenpox as a child. In 1990, my young son got chickenpox. This was about 5 years before we had a vaccine for it here in the US. He ran through it in record time, with no problems. Two weeks to the day after his outbreak, I also broke out with chickenpox. I was 30 years old at the time. It was horrible. Those little sores you see on a kid had nothing on me. I was covered with blisters from head to toe. They were everywhere on my body. Yes, even there. Anywhere you can possibly imagine. Then came the real bad stuff. The chills. The aches and burning pain. The double vision. The constant fever. The swelling. The itching.

I called my doctor at the first signs. He told me a few things to do and watch for. He told me that this was more dangerous for anyone past the age of puberty. He had me calling him every 4 hours 'round the clock to see how I was doing. At one point, I forgot to call, and he called me. He always wanted to know my temperature, what I was feeling, etc. From start to finish, this crap took three weeks of my life. The first week and a half was the hardest. When it was all over, my Doc had me in to his office to check me out, as I was no longer a threat to anyone else. Things turned out OK, but he shook me with one comment. He told me that I was just one of those phone calls away from having an ambulance sent to get me. Had my fever not broken, I was facing possible death. He also told me that I was now at great risk of getting Shingles in my life. So far, so good.

So, to the anti-vaxxers I say this: Fuck your personal beliefs. You are but one of 7 billion. The rest of us want to live the healthiest lives we can.

How did you manage to not get it as a child?

Anyway, now that most kids are vaccinated, it's riskier not to be because of the chance of being exposed as an adult.

That's really scary. I was not aware there is a chicken pox vaccine (don't have kids) and was wondering why one was necessary. When I was young, everyone got the pox and it was no big deal. A PITA, but considered a childhood rite of passage. Heck, parents would purposely let their kids get infected so they could get it over and done with. Because of that, I always figured it was relatively harmless. Now I know different. Thank you.
(I am 100% pro vaccines, btw, just unaware of some modern advances)

ETA: chatting with hubby about this and he reminded me that we were told "children get chicken pox, adults get shingles" back then. That's probably why I never thought about an adult having the pox.

After you get chickenpox and recover from it, the virus remains dormant in your body. After several decades, your body loses its immunity to the virus, so that it becomes reactivated as shingles.

If you never had chickenpox as a child, and you weren’t vaccinated, you can get chickenpox from someone who has chickenpox, or from direct contact with the fluid inside a shingles blister.

Shingles is horrible and can be very dangerous, so it’s probably a good idea to get vaccinated against it every five years once you reach the age of sixty.

If you've ever seen Gamgi (Korean film, means flu) about a deadly virus outbreak, they do a nice job in the beginning showing how easily the virus passes from person to person through airborne pathogens
Early infectees are small children, a doctor, etc. All of these people come in contact with others on buses, in pharmacies, stores, hospitals, schools, etc. Creating a new wave of people infected, who infect others.
Kunkel is an idiot. He's a lot worse. He's 18, he should know better. If he wants to play basketball get his fing shot

list to stream, thanks.

Turns out a lot people who like that also like Train to Busan: "When a mysterious virus breaks out across the country, the infected turn into the murderous undead. A few terrified travelers find themselves trapped on a bullet train from hell, fighting for their lives as hordes of the living dead crash towards them, crawling closer with every stop. Suspicion is rife and tensions run high as some will do anything to survive and make it to the safe zone."

I'm not normally into zombies, but Korean culture, dubbed into English, might just create a great synergy in the genre, so I put that on my list also.

But what makes Korean Horror movies rather interesting is that they often deal with serious social issues. Yeogo Goedam, a horror-ghost movie from the late 90's dealt with authoritarianism and issues involving problems at Korean schools. There are five in the series. Some have dealt with almost taboo issues in Korea, like a teacher who, after she hanged herself, is discovered to have been a lesbian, child abuse, suicide (especially related to school), gay relationships, teacher-student relationships, underage sex, adults and minors having sex, teen prostitution, mental issues, animal abuse, body shaming and the quest for perfection (plastic surgery) social ostracizing and bullying, etc

These were things that were explored in horror movies and on occasion nearly got the movie banned -- Yeogo Goedam (Whispering Corridors), Momento Mori (the second in the series) were both nearly banned, among an outcry from conservative groups. The 5th, A Blood Pledge, found itself in the cross-hairs because it criticized the difference between how girls and boys were treated after the girl got pregnant. Cinderella uses dark humor and horror to poke at the preoccupation with physical beauty and plastic surgery.
