Black actor gets $13.1 million settlement after being framed by police for murder
BY ARIS FOLLEY - 03/21/19 03:35 PM EDT
A black man who spent more than six years behind bars won a $13.1 million settlement from the city of San Francisco after it was revealed he was framed by police for murder, The Associated Press reports.
According to the news agency, the city's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to settle a civil rights lawsuit brought by Jamal Trulove on Tuesday. The settlement had been negotiated by attorneys for the city and Trulove.
. . .
In April 2018, a California jury found two police officers involved in the case, Maureen D'Amico and Michael Johnson, had deliberately fabricated evidence against Trulove and failed to disclose vital information that could have exonerated him, according to the news agency.
Trulove's attorneys also said police coerced a key eyewitness in the case.

(42,862 posts)Is it just the city that pays, or will they have to pay for their actions as well?

(15,373 posts)I don't see the mayor or other officials paying a single penny out of their pockets for allowing this to happen.
Instead the burden will fall on the people who didn't make the decisions - the taxpayers.
Yes - it can be argued that we (taxpayers) can vote for new officials but it takes a lot of time and the offerings are "more of the same."
I'd like to see some corporal punishment (not capital, necessarily) for officials that are grossly negligent.

What's the cost to the officers? Are they simply fired and sent on their way... or are the confined or do they have to suffer any personal financial consequences?

(54,447 posts)That is a crime for which there is hardly a decent recompense. Six years of the guys life? How do you pay THAT back?

(26,332 posts)atleast 25 years in prison without parole.
If the person convicted was on death row or put to death then perhaps the same sentence should be dealt to those who framed the person as its just as much premeditated murder on their part then.
