White House has signaled it may seek permanent renewal of controversial surveillance power

By Ellen Nakashima, National security reporter
May 1 at 6:00 AM

The Trump administration has signaled in recent weeks that it may seek the permanent renewal of a surveillance law that has, among other things, enabled the National Security Agency to gather and analyze Americans’ phone records as part of terrorism investigations, according to five U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The White House, these officials said, was prepared to issue a public statement calling on Congress to reauthorize in full Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which in the past has been the focus of heated debate over the acceptable bounds of government surveillance. The plan to issue a statement was put on hold, officials said, but it illustrates nonetheless where the administration stands on the contested issue of national security authority.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an issue that remains deeply sensitive. ... A White House spokeswoman declined to comment or explain why the statement was not issued, saying only that the matter is still under deliberation.

Would they willfully grant this power to Barack Obama or any Democratic President? If not, GTFO.

Never grant the BEST person more power than you want the WORST person to have. Even if we are lucky enough to end up with President Warren or Buttegeig, Do not permanently give them any more power than you'd want President Scott Walker to have.

Republicans did not repeal the Patriot Act during Obama's presidency.
Enough Democrats went along with it when Bush was president.

We're stuck with the surveillance state. No party objects.

I hope the Democrats will prove me wrong this time, but I'm not holding my breath.

...it sounds like the trump admin wants 2 things: 1) for this to be made permanent - no more congressional review and renewal - and 2) to have Section 215 restored in full. (Section 215 of the law was amended to stop the National Security Agency (NSA) from continuing its mass phone data collection program).

The Democratic House should not consent to either of those requests.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they spin this into a good thing, given that this was how they made their fame and fortune in the first fuckin' place...
