UPDATE: Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi announces he'll retire in 2020

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, announced Saturday that he’ll retire in 2020, after 22 years in office.

Enzi, 75, shared his decision at a news conference at the Gillette City Hall. “I have much to get done in the next year and a half,” Enzi said, according to the Casper Star Tribune. “I want to focus on budget reform. I don’t want to be burdened by the distractions of another campaign. After this year, I’ll find other ways to serve.”

Enzi’s retirement opens a seat in a Republican-leaning state and focuses attention on Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who unsuccessfully tried to challenge Enzi in the 2014 election. Cheney, daughter of former vice president Richard B. Cheney, is No. 3 in the House Republican leadership.

Enzi began his political career as Gillette mayor, then moved on to the Wyoming Legislature. He was sworn into office in 1997. Enzi has passed more than 100 bills. He is currently chairmen of the Budget Committee, and played a key role in getting the 2017 tax cut signed into law.

The 75-year-old senator, who has been in office since 1997, made the announcement in his home state of Wyoming. He said he wanted to spend the rest of his term focused on budget reform.

Enzi’s decision opens up a seat in the Republican-leaning state. Among the possible candidates is Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who is No. 3 in the House GOP leadership.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

To bad it failed and instead they used it to do a number of things that 20 years ago would have potentially lead to charges of treason.

That has been the theme ever since the old guard realized that they had in fact lost control of their own party to idiotic extremists who will either be arrested or will self-implode once they lose their position of power/fifteen minutes. One after the other, they are dropping out. I stress this to all Dems... do not let them just walk away. If you have to extend statues to make sure they don't run out, then do so. After all, if they have not done anything wrong...

what happened in a number of elections such as GA where they had to spend millions more to win in some elections that would have been an easy win 10 years ago for them.
After all even they have limits on what they can spend and eventually they will run out of money or divert it from other elections and costing them those so either way its a win for us.

I don't think there are any strong statewide D candidates in WY.

Seriously... Trump only received 7% of their primary vote and still beat Clinton by well over 3-1.

Wyoming is the smallest state, with a population of less than 600,000. If I recall correctly, they had a Dem governor not too long ago. Western states are different from Southern states, and they tend to have a wide libertarian streak and a “just leave me alone” attitude. The right Dem could catch fire, even in Wyoming. Anything can happen in politics - case in point, Trump. The thought of Senator Cheney makes me physically ill. 🙄

He's a few years older than me. I don't think I'd have the energy or desire to do as much work as a senator should do. And I'm sure his senate retirement plan is just fine, with good health care, etc. Better than basic Medicare.

And, he has a right-wing protege to take his place, so it's not like he's giving up to the left. Liz might be even more right.
