Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Gives Birth to a Boy

Source: NYT

LONDON — Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, whose marriage last year brought historic change to Britain’s royal family, on Monday welcomed a son, the first interracial baby in the monarchy’s recent history.

The newborn is seventh in line to the British throne, behind Prince Harry. It is not clear whether the child will receive a royal title, like those bestowed on the three children of Prince William, Harry’s older brother, and William’s wife, Catherine.

The baby is sure to be the object of uncommon fascination, adored and criticized as a symbol of the modernization of Britain’s royal family.

Prince Harry, 34, and the former Meghan Markle, 37, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have shaken up the royal family in a number of ways: Their wedding last May featured a gospel choir, a freestyling African-American pastor and a gaggle of Hollywood celebrities.

Unlike many other countries, the US taxes its citizens on all income, wherever they reside or earn that income.

It would be a very bad decision for this child to maintain US citizenship (assuming that Markle has not revoked hers already).

44. There are several caveats regarding foreign-earned income.
Mon May 6, 2019, 04:34 PM
May 2019

In my case, as a US citizen residing full-time in Canada, none of my income is taxable because I make less than a certain amount. The threshold in 2018 was just over $100k, I believe. Anything over that is taxable, though, and you are supposed to report it to the IRS, regardless of the amount.

That being said, I've never bothered to report my foreign-earned income to the IRS, and I've never been hassled about it when crossing the border. It might be different if I intended to return to the States to reside full-time. We've got no plans to do so, though. The US doesn't regard my wife's profession as a "desired profession" for the purposes of immigration, so we have no real reason to want to leave Canada, and plenty of reasons to want to stay.

It hadn't been done before at the hospital where I gave birth, but my ob/gyn was the head of obstetrics and he said he was fine with it. This was when I was in active labor and they were wheeling me into the delivery room. I hadn't said anything to the doctor ahead of time, but I had mentioned it to my husband that I thought men should be in the delivery room when their children were born. Apparently my husband remembered me saying that and I was the budding feminist, so he told the nurses he wanted to be in the room. Could have bowled me over with a feather! He almost passed out. LOL

How wonderful that must be. What a remarkable young couple.

I hope people are prepared that this boy will forever be in the shadow of Prince George because of his place in line to the crown. Being the son of the second son in the succession. In one sense, that may make the boy feel second place. On the other, that will give him a freedom to enjoy his life without being under such scrutiny, like Harry's life was.

I bet he'll be a handsome young man, given what his parents look like.

FFS when will everyone accept that there is only one "race" and that it is the human race? How can any two humans produce an "interracial" baby. We'd do better to examine the reasons that some people use that language...

It is what it is. I'd rather that people acknowledge and respect the differences in the ethnic and cultural backgrounds rather than pretend that they don't exist.

We'd do better to examine the reasons that some people use that language...
Or we could concentrate on more vital matters that would make a bigger impact in understanding and respect and celebration of cultures and ethnicities different from our own.

FFS, indeed.

the use of a midwife is the preferred way, with use of what I presume was a "birthing center." It gets away from the over medicalization of childbirth while maintaining proper medical safeguards.

According to British tabloids, anyway:

However, according to the Daily Mail, Meghan was taken to a London hospital by Harry and their security team.

The move was apparently so secret, even senior royals were not initially aware.

Meghan delivered her baby boy – an eighth great-grandchild for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh – at 5.26am today, weighing 7lb 3oz.

She is believed to have given birth in the Portland Hospital, where Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were delivered.

But I admit to getting some small fun in following the royal family. As someone who used to design dresses when a little girl, I enjoy noting the fashions that they choose. Yes, it's trivial, but everyone has a few guilty pleasures.

I know that I sure as heck would rather follow the Windsors than the Kardashians. The Windsors' clothes have more cloth in them.

I have no idea if "Harrison" is them being super-literal, or it there's any family connection - Archie was 18th most popular in England and Wales in 2017, Harrison 34th (I don't think I've met a Harrison in my entire 50 year life).

60. The Meaning Behind Meghan Markle's Baby Photo Dress
Wed May 8, 2019, 01:08 PM

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry finally introduced the world to their newborn son (who has a name now!) today. And while most people were rightfully focused on baby boy, Meghan’s dress also made a statement. The sleeveless white dress is by Grace Wales Bonner, who is known for her award-winning menswear, though she makes acclaimed womenswear as well. Wales Bonner’s London runway show was a favorite of the fashion set last season, and she’s one of the coolest up-and-coming designers in fashion at the moment. Another good fashion decision from Meghan.

Wales Bonner studied at Central Saint Martins in London — essentially the Harvard of design. Her menswear collections have won many awards, including the Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards, the LVMH Prize, and the L’Oréal Professional Talent Award for her graduate collection. As a designer who is known for tailoring and relaxed menswear-inspired womenswear, it was a smart choice for the most fashion-forward royal. But there’s one more reason that makes this choice especially poignant for Markle. Wales Bonner’s work often references her bi-racial heritage (her father is Jamaican and her mother is English) and the politics of race. As Markle introduced her newborn to the world, she made a point of subtly acknowledging his (and her own) heritage.
