Source: KKTV

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KKTV) - ARTICLE UPDATED AT 3:05 P.M.

At about 2 p.m. the Douglas County Sheriff's Office put out an alert tied to a shooting at a school with multiple injuries.

"This is still an active shooter situation. We still don't know whether there is still an active shooter inside," said a spokeswoman with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office just before 3 p.m. "Two suspects are in custody."

The shooting happened at the STEM school at Ridgeline and Plaza in Highlands Ranch at about 1:53 p.m. Highlands Ranch is a suburb of Denver. Authorities asked the public to avoid the area. It isn't clear if anyone is injured, but the sheriff's office said this is an "unstable situation."

The school has more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grades.

At least two juveniles were shot according to authorities.

Multiple rescue units were on scene treating the injured just before 3 p.m.

As of 2:40 p.m. deputies were still in the process of identifying and locating the shooter or shooters.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis sent out the following statement at 3:05 p.m.:

"We are making all of our public safety resources available to assist the Douglas County Sheriff's Department in their effort to secure the site and evacuate the students. We are monitoring the situation in real time. The heart of all Colorado is with the victims and their families."

Kendrick Castillo saved other kids, but he should NEVER have been in such a situation.

Seven people have been injured in a shooting at a Denver school where two suspects have been taken into custody and a third is still feared to be on the loose. The shots were reported at STEM School Highlands Ranch on Tuesday afternoon at 1.53pm. Two people are in custody and police feared that a third was at large but they have now said they do not believe there is still a threat. Witnesses say one injured person was seen being carried out by a cop on their shoulder. Another was seen being taken out on a stretcher, according to another witness. Paramedics are treating other victims on the scene. The school serves children from Kindergarten to 12th grade. It has more than 1800 students. Police have not yet revealed whether the attackers are students or even what their sexes are. Elementary school children were seen walking out of the school with their hands in the air as authorities started evacuating the scene.

STEM schools do not exclusively teach the STEM subjects; they emphasize them and afford students who are gifted or interested in those areas an opportunity to emphasize them. They are often paired with private industries and entrepreneurial activities to encourage these students to prepare for a career in STEM fields, in which there is a critical need for new, competent, workers.

STEM schools have been around for 2-3 decades.

and discussed broadly in the context of the technology gap between our country and other countries who do a better job of preparing students to become scientist, I would have expected you to have at least a passing familiarity with it.

They still need to meet curriculum standards. In fact some schools have changed the acronym to STEAM in order to specifically highlight that Arts are included. These schools do focus, however, on advanced instruction in the sciences by more qualified teachers, providing continual challenges to gifted students who probably would probably outstrip the instruction available at a standard school.

Injured is a superset of wounded.

All wounded are injured but not all injured are wounded (where skin is broken).

Some people in incidents like this may have been injured by heart attack, broken bones diving for cover, blunt force trauma after being whacked with an empty gun, burned by a fire ignited by gunfire, suffocated by gas released by a punctured tank, etc., none of which involve being shot or even having skin broken.

Denver Post

A student shot at the STEM School in Highlands Ranch has died, according to Denver7, and law enforcement officials have reported eight students were injured in the gunfire that erupted Tuesday afternoon inside the school.

Two male students, one who is an adult and one who is a juvenile, are in custody, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said.

The suspects went “deep inside the school” and engaged in two locations, he said. The suspects used at least one handgun but it was unknown what other weapons might have been used.
