After a tornado ripped through northeastern Kansas Tuesday evening, reports of damage came in from the cities of Lawrence and Bonner Springs.
In Lawrence police reported large trees down, along with power lines and debris along roads on the southeastern edge of the city.
Some areas were impassable, police said, noting that the tornado appeared to have passed outside the city limits.

(8,028 posts)they are ok, but took shelter in their basement along with other family and friends. She has lived there for most of her life and said it was the most terrifying storm shes ever experienced.

I have been here my whole life and my most terrifying was the June 8, 1966 F5 that took out much of Topeka. I was outside watching it. This would be much like that I think. These big storms are just so common now.
I am so glad they are safe. I sometimes wonder if our shelters in our basements are enough for these newer big tornadoes. I have not heard differently but it sure seems like they might not be enough anymore.

(8,028 posts)Loved the excitement of tornado warnings, but what did I know?
Now I live in earthquake country and I have a feeling that my basement wont help.

(34,108 posts)We had a small fracking quake up here that woke me up, startled the cats and shook the bed but that was from a quake in Oklahoma. I was in a small quake in Honduras. That one we heard coming, we were on an island and it sounded like jets. During that time jets were not allowed to fly over there because of the crap the Reagan administration had stirred up so that made us all look around just in time for all our chairs to rise up and then go down as the sound went away. It was a wave of the earth. It was crazy and I will never forget it and do not ever want to feel the ground move under me again!
I am not sure I could live with earthquakes that are not tiny. I don't even like the tiny ones! Yikes!
