Trump Says U.S. Will Hit Mexico With Tariffs on All Goods

WASHINGTON -- President Trump said Thursday he planned to impose a 5 percent tariff on all imported goods from Mexico beginning June 10, a tax that he said would "gradually increase" until Mexico stopped the flow of undocumented immigrants across the border.

The announcement, which Mr. Trump hinted at on Thursday morning and announced on his Twitter feed, said the tariffs would be in place "until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP."

In a presidential statement that followed Mr. Trump's tweet, he said that tariffs would be raised to 10 percent on July 1 "if the crisis persists," and then by another 5 percent each month for three months. "Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory," the statement said.

Mr. Trump's announcement came the same day his administration told Congress it planned to seek congressional approval of the new trade pact with Mexico and Canada, known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The president has used the threat of tariffs to try to pressure foreign leaders into taking a wide array of actions, from renegotiating trade deals to limiting the amount of metal or cars they ship to the United States. In April, he threatened to place a 25 percent tariff on Mexican cars if the country wouldn't take action to stem the flow of migrants through the southern border, walking back a promise he had made in the revised North American trade agreement to exempt Mexico from such a measure.

BREAKING: President Trump on Thursday said he would be imposing a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican goods imported to the United States beginning June 10 until undocumented migrants cease crossing the border, a dramatic escalation of his immigration fight that could have major consequences for the U.S. economy.

Trump, in a series of Twitter posts, said the tariffs would increase in size “until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP.”

By the time Perot ran the writing was on the wall. In a modern economy jobs go where they fit best. We could have been Germany and still be the producer of high tech industrial goods had republicans not killed unions and allowed Americans companies to shrink wages. But deregulation of Wall Street that made chasing profits quarter by quarter rather than long term investment the way CEOs are judged.

First, Germany has nothing to do with NAFTA - they do however assess and collect value added taxes (VAT) which are effectively tariffs. Reagan/Bush reduced and effectively ended tariffs in favor of a free trade agreement model, which attacks workers and environmental protections. Tariffs were throughout our nation's history great worker protection. Trump didn't invent Tariffs. The fact that he cannot do ANYTHING correctly leads me to believe that he is not even doing that properly.

Your giving Trump sole credit for using tariffs appears naive. You should not imply that - it makes you seem like a Trumper. If you are, bless your heart, and get ready for big time defeat.

In the '92 election, Perot participated during the entire election process, including several debates where the major issue was the already negotiated NAFTA, where Perot campaigned against it, vowing not to sign the agreement, and the other candidates campaigned on signing it. Your 'By the time Perot ran...' looks like it refers to the '96 election when he popped in and out of candidacy (he claimed he received violent threats at his daughter's wedding about continuing to run - to this day, many republicans claim Bush did not lose that election, but that Perot split the conservatives in the republican coalition).

In recent presidential election cycles, more has been made about free trade agreements, as each president has continued to create them. Free trade agreement popularity has waned, and on the liberal side of the media, it has been speculated that anyone running against free trade agreements could win a lot of votes from regions where manufacturing has been decimated by jobs being moved out of country. This is why Bernie Sanders added this to his campaign, and it is one of the reasons many felt if nominated, he could beat Trump on this during the general. The Clintons were historically opposite on this, and Hillary was forced, during the campaign to issue a statement saying she would not fully support the newly negotiated trans pacific agreement.

A new hurdle has surfaced in getting the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) approved as Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders asked President Donald Trump to abandon his push for the USMCA/NAFTA 2.0, reports Pro Farmer’s Jim Wiesemeyer.

“The NAFTA treaty that Trump renegotiated with Mexico will still allow companies like General Motors to send our jobs to Mexico,” Sanders (I-Vt.) said during a rally at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich. “So today, I challenge Donald Trump: For once in your life, keep your campaign promises.”

The Vermont senator urged Trump to go back to the drawing board and rework USMCA.

“Do not send this treaty to Congress unless it includes strong and swift enforcement mechanisms to raise the wages of workers and to prevent corporations from outsourcing American jobs to Mexico,” Sanders said.

29. NAFTA has been good for Texas

The economy in Texas is booming. Texas is the top exporting state and much of the exports go to Mexico. At the same time, Texas imports from Mexico. The import/export between Texas and Mexico is pretty much a wash. But both benefit because the exports create jobs in both places and the imports bring in good to drive up consumer sales. NAFTA has a lot to do with it.

My understanding of the new trade agreement is that it will be very much like NAFTA. This is being followed closely in Texas and reported in the papers and on TV. If Trump's crazy immigrant tariff scheme goes through it will really make a mess of the Texas/Mexico trade relationship.

13. Not just there

Probably most of the "off-season" fruits and veggies that are available in the colder parts of the U.S. during winter are coming from there - e.g., tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc.

Here on the east coast, Florida can have some ready during the spring, but Mexico has it all set up.

I suppose we may end up going back to the way it was during my parents generation and before - buying produce "in season" as it was rarely if ever available during the winter.
