Trump says he is 'thinking of' executive order to revive census citizenship question
Source: Washington Post
President Trump said Friday that he is thinking of issuing an executive order to add a controversial citizenship question to the 2020 Census, telling reporters at the White House that he is exploring four or five different options to move forward.
Trump raised the possibility that some kind of addendum could be printed separately after further litigation of the issue, a move would almost certainly carry additional costs and may not be feasible, according to census experts.
Well see what happens, Trump said. We could start the printing now and maybe do an addendum after we get a positive decision. So were working on a lot of things including an executive order.
Census experts say that among other concerns, such an addendum would likely violate the bureaus strict rules on testing a question, which include considering how the placement of a question on the form affects respondents likelihood of filling it out.

An executive order to override what the constitution clearly states? Yeah, right. I'd love to see how far this nonsense will go and this just goes to clearly show more and more what a bigot and racist he is.

He's got those idiots that work for him trying to find any piece of shit reason to use the EO. Then when he can't find anything that's reasonably half assed he'll just brush it off like it never happened.

(57,600 posts)Trump's statement that they want the citizenship question for use in redistricting is awkward given that the Solicitor General told the Supreme Court the exact opposite a few weeks ago -- the SG specifically said that was not their motive.

And on top of this, of course, with know from the Hofeller memo that the goal of using citizenship in redistricting is to help "Republicans and non-Hispanic Whites." So Trump is now adopting that motivation, full stop.

(12,047 posts)The last time a citizenship question was among the census questions for all U.S. households was in 1950. That form asked where each person was born and in a follow-up question asked, "If foreign born Is he naturalized?"
In 1970, the Census Bureau began sending around two questionnaires: a short-form questionnaire to gather basic population information and a long form that asked detailed questions about everything from household income to plumbing. The short form went to most households in America. The long form was sent to a much smaller sample of households, 1 in 6. Most people didn't get it.
Starting in 1970, questions about citizenship were included in the long-form questionnaire but not the short form.

(4,402 posts)So undercounting the number of actual people in your district by pretending undocumented people don't exist means that you get fewer schools, hospitals, parks, libraries, swimming pools, land rezoned for housing and business, etc. not to mention less funding for a whole range of services and infrastructure projects.
The morons who think they're getting some kind of "advantage" by adding a question that means the number of people in their district will be undercounted are primarily screwing themselves out of funding for infrastructure, affordable housing and job growth.

(3,512 posts)If Trump issues an Executive Order to have a question added to the US Census, despite a ruling by the courts, couldn't the NEXT president issue an Executive Order to include a question asking how many guns are in the home and how they were purchased?
