Barr Won't Recuse Himself From New Case Against Jeffrey Epstein
Source: Bloomberg
Attorney General William Barr wont recuse himself from involvement in the new charges filed against alleged sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein by federal prosecutors in New York, according to a Justice Department official.
Barr made the decision on Tuesday after consulting with career ethics officials at the department, said the official, who asked not to be identified discussing a sensitive matter.
Barr weighed whether he would have to remove himself from involvement in the case in part because Epstein had previously hired lawyers from the law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Barr served as counsel to the law firm before becoming attorney general.
But Barr has recused himself from any retrospective review of the Justice Departments decision more than a decade ago letting Epstein avoid prosecution on federal sex-trafficking offenses in Florida and the decades of prison time that he could have faced if convicted.

(22,114 posts)to see him blatantly interfere in a criminal case for no valid reason at all, and then later, after we're in Power in the Spring of 2021, go after Barr for protecting a sexual predator (and the rest of the GOP that didn't say a word against him and/or supported Barr in his actions).
The GOP is now out in the open a sexual predators allowed party.
I want to throw up.

(6,019 posts)... will be if he does. I would like to think there still is a red line with Republican voters when it comes to child molestation, but I really doubt there is. There is no end to the level of depravity they're willing to ignore when it serves them politically.

While hiring Epstein, a noted mathematics genius, was not strange on its face, the hire was unusual for a number of reasons. Epstein had not earned a college degree as he dropped out of New Yorks prestigious Cooper Union. The other odd circumstance was that the new teacher was only 20 years of age.

(16,254 posts)So, recused or not, can he control any of the attorneys involved in either case? I assume he has some power due to being the federal A.G. He's just recused from reviewing the Florida case? Did I read that right?
There must be some serious discussions going on, both today and last night. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing...which is certainly nothing new with this administration.

This may also be where Russia has extremely compromising information, and possibly photos, and would be a much more powerful blackmail cache. (3,186 posts)Trump can pardon federal charges, but he can't do a thing about state charges, and SDNY is all up in Epstein's business. He's gonna die in jail no matter what he does. The length of the sentence will ultimately just be a high score for the prosecution.
The real question is who he'll drag down with him. Given the circles he ran in, I expect there are more than a few household names involved in this disgusting affair. I hope they have Epstein in protective custody, because given what he knows, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he died of a "heart attack" before the trial.

Legal experts have raised concerns over a report that Attorney General William Barr will not recuse himself from a new case against billionaire and alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Barr decided Tuesday against recusing himself, after assessing the situation with career ethics officials at the Department of Justice, an anonymous department official told media outlets including Bloomberg and CNN. Barr said yesterday that he had removed himself from the case as Epstein in the past retained attorneys from the law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where Barr previously worked as counsel.
However, Barr will remain recused from any retrospective review of the Justice Department's decision more than a decade ago that allowed Epstein, who faced allegations of federal sex trafficking offenses in Florida, to avoid federal charges.
Epstein's case has drawn even great scrutiny because Trump's Labor Secretary Alex Acosta was the top federal prosecutor in Miami and approved the controversial deal letting Epstein plead guilty to two state charges of soliciting a prostitute. Epstein served 13 months in a prison in Florida but was released to conduct business most days.
Among former federal prosecutors alarmed at the reports that Barr would not recuse himself is Mimi Rocah, who served as an assistant attorney in the Southern District of New York.

During Attorney General, William Barrs confirmation hearing, he was mostly peppered with questions about how he would handle the Mueller Report. Senator Ben Sasses (R-NE) questioning, however, diverged from the pack. Sasse asked Barr about the lenient sentence given out to billionaire pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein. The future Attorney General told Sasse that he would look into the matter.
This, however, was not the first connection between Barr and his family and the disgraced pedophile. In 1973, Barrs father Donald, the headmaster at Manhattans Dalton School, hired Epstein as a calculus and physics teacher.
Apparently, the hire was a successful one. The New Yorker wrote in a 2003 profile on Epstein, he was something of a Robin WilliamsinDead Poets Society type of figure, wowing his high-school classes with passionate mathematical riffs. Epsteins mathematical skills caught the eye of Bear Stearns chairman, Alan Ace Greenberg, whose son attended the Dalton School. Greenberg hired Epstein as an options trader and the former teacher was able to amass a fortune.

That alone is grounds for recusal.
