Texas Republicans criticize Trump over tweets

A handful of Texas Republicans in Congress admonished President Donald Trump for a series of Sunday tweets in which he told four members of Congress — three born in the U.S. and all American citizens — to “go back” to the countries they came from, even as Trump doubled down on his comments Monday.

“POTUS was wrong to say any American citizen, whether in Congress or not, has any ‘home’ besides the U.S.,” U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, who lives just outside Austin in Hays County, said in a tweet Sunday night.

Republican U.S. Reps. Will Hurd of Helotes, a longtime thorn in the president’s side on border security issues, and Pete Olson of Sugar Land, who has been more hesitant to criticize the president, delivered stronger rebukes.

In an interview Monday on CNN, Hurd called the tweets “racist,” “xenophobic” and “unbecoming of the leader of the free world.” On Twitter, Olson called on Trump to “immediately disavow his comments” and added that the tweets were “not reflective of the values of the 1,000,000+ people in Texas (District) 22.”

Their comments were notable because most Republicans remained silent on the topic, even as Democrats, including the objects of Trump’s ire, spoke forcefully against him...............

It may be that it is a slow trickle of Repug condemation of Trump racist comments.
I see both Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney put out statements condemning the comments, but they did not call them racists. --there may have been other Repugs who put out post but I have not seen them

2. Both Roy and Hurd live in largely-Latino districts.

I’m no fan of either representative’s politics, but I suspect both solons realize that Trump’s rhetoric threatens their political survival. Hurd represents a border district that stretches from San Antonio almost to El Paso, one that is largely Mexican-American. Roy is a horrible Tea-bagger, but his district is also largely Latino, if not as much as Hurd’s. Both representatives stay in office largely because Texas Latinos haven’t been motivated to go out and vote the way that Afro-Americans and other populations have been.

I don’t think Donnie understands what’s been happening in southern Texas. This isn’t New York State or Florida—there are a LOT of Latinos living not only in big cities, but spray-painted out into small Texas towns and rural areas. Orange Julius has been giving the Latinos in their districts motivation—motivation NOT to vote Republican.

5. Chip Roy is a total POS, and this statement reeks of desperation

He's the guy who single-handedly blocked disaster funding, including to his own state post-Hurricane Harvey, which took place nearly two years earlier, because freedom bald eagles something freedom. So he's not only in a majority Latino district, people are not going to forget his bullshit on disaster relief.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives passed a major disaster relief bill Monday evening, concluding a series of dramatic delays in Congress and sending the legislation to the desk of President Trump.

The $19.1 billion bill, which Trump is expected to sign, would allocate funding to nine disaster-affected states and two territories, and also release more than $4 billion to Texas that Congress allocated more than a year ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. After meeting unexpected resistance in the House that stalled the vote for 11 days, the bill at last broke through Monday by an overwhelming, bipartisan margin of 354-58.

The bill passed in the U.S. Senate just before the Memorial Day recess but hit an obstacle when it reached the House floor. Most members had already left Washington for the holiday. Backers of the legislation had hoped to push it through on a voice vote before the recess. These efforts were thwarted by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, an Austin Republican, who drew national attention for his blocking of the vote by using a procedural objection. Two other conservative House members later made similar objections, ensuring that Congress couldn't send the bill to Trump until after the recess.

But I am giving him the benefit of the doubt by saying that maybe, just maybe, he knows his district and Hays County, Texas slightly better than Orange Julius and Stephen Miller.

Of course that’s not saying very much.

And discovered Hillary won the district 49.8-46.4...Me thinks Hurd may have something to worry about if a solid Hispanic dem candidate runs against him next cycle.

I think it would be Democratic without Texas Republican gerrymandering, but even so, Hurd has proven astute enough to keep it. That doesn’t mean I like Hurd’s politics, but I respect his talent.
