Trump's tax returns required under new California election law

Source: Los Angeles Times

President Trump will be ineligible for California’s primary ballot next year unless he discloses his tax returns under a state law that immediately took effect Tuesday, an unprecedented mandate that is almost certain to spark a high-profile court fight and might encourage other states to adopt their own unconventional rules for presidential candidates.

The law, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on his final day to take action and passed on a strict party-line vote in the Legislature, requires all presidential candidates to submit five years of income tax filings. They must do so by late November in order to secure a spot on California’s presidential primary ballot in March. State elections officials will post the financial documents online, although certain private information must first be redacted.

“As one of the largest economies in the world and home to one in nine Americans eligible to vote, California has a special responsibility to require this information of presidential and gubernatorial candidates,” Newsom said in a statement that accompanied his signature on the bill approved by the Legislature earlier this month. “These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards, and to restore public confidence. The disclosure required by this bill will shed light on conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or influence from domestic and foreign business interest.”

Trump, who is not singled out by the law but is clearly its inspiration, is likely to fight back.

Does that mean he has to win in California courts? That will take time. If the law is in effect now, tough luck.

CA is on firm ground here as the state pays for their primaries. Ergo, they can set conditions for those who would participate free of charge in said primaries.

A gesture more than anything else - will the Rs even hold primaries to challenge tRump? Doubt it.

will not be holding a primary in California for the 2020 Presidential election.
Since California is an open state, as an (R) you can vote for a (D) candidate and
(D) can vote for an (R) candidate.
They are already telling their (R) voters to vote for the worst (D) on the ballot,
knowing that they will not hold a Republican Primary.

Because he knows he won't carry California. But the primary makes it more interesting.

in 2016. What other states are likely to enact similar legislation? How many delegates do they represent.

It is virtually impossible to imagine a scenario where Trump doesn't get to the Republican convention with enough votes for the nomination or, at worst, a commanding lead over the rest of the field. In 2016, his closest competitor had 484 delegates -- he had 1725.

this new law would make all of California's Republican delegates available. That could encourage a serious opponent to run.

Come up with some requirement like candidates must release their college transcripts or medical records or take a DNA test or something else targeted at Democrats just to be a PITA?

however, Gorsuch and the other 4 assholes on the Supreme Court will delight in overturning it.

Maybe Obama should have sued Moscow Mitch over his refusal to give Garland even a hearing.
